This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the American Idols concert in Atlanta, Georgia. This is the first time I have ever had a desire to go to one of these concerts. I almost went to the second season concert but I really didn't enjoy many of the contestants so I figured why spend the money. This year was different I really enjoyed many of the top ten and thought it would be a fun night. Not only was it a fun night, this is one of the best concerts I have ever been too.
We arrived a few minutes late to the arena because of the traffic. We thought we were going to miss the beginning of the show but because of the rain and traffic, the concert actually started at 7:15 instead of 7:00. Our seats were on the floor in the second section back. We had aisle seats and were actually pretty close to the stage. There were probably only 8 rows between the stage and us. We had very good seats.
As we sat down and began to look around, I was surprised at how bare the stage was. It was pretty much just a bunch of steps covered in white cloth material.

The band was seated on the top step and behind them there was a huge screen. Personally I thought with all the money the producers of American Idol make they could have at least bought a few props.
At 7:15 the concert began. It amazed me to see what a diverse crowd attended. I saw everyone from small children to elderly men. Speaking of men, I was quite surprised by how many were there. The concert started out sort of like you were watching the television shows opening intro. The AI theme music began to play and that little opening they run began to play. It's the one were the computer generated guys and girls sing and then they show all the previous winners. Some clips from this season followed and as soon as the idols came on the screen the place went wild. The band began to play and we began to wonder who would be up first. We thought they might come out in the order they were eliminated but we weren't sure.
First up for the night was Jessica Sierra. She sang two songs. "The Boys are Back in Town" and "Shop Around". I was actually surprised by how good her voice was. Television did not do her justice. I understand why she was voted off though. She had one of the worse stage performances. This show had a lot of small kids in attendance and I felt the way she was rubbing the microphone stand at times was a little much. There was a man in front of us who had his son up on his shoulders at the start of the show. The child could not have been more than five and it was kind of funny to see how fast he took that child down when she started hanging all over that stand. I think if Jessica could improve her overall performance she could do well. She had one of the best voices of the night.
Anwar Robinson followed Jessica. I am not sure why he followed her because he was not the next person voted off. I am not sure in what order they were going in. Anwar started off the evening with "A House is not a Home". As we all know Anwar likes the slow stuff. I was hoping he might pick it up a little but even his second number "What a Wonderful World" was slow. Both pieces were excellent, but I always did think that Anwar had a great voice. With all the stress off of him he sounded like the Anwar we heard during auditions. Boy did I miss that Anwar during the rest of the season.
Constantine Maroulis performed next and the place went crazy. I was amazed at how many older women were up on their feet cheering for him. I always liked Constantine because no matter what, he always gave a great performance. He went home to early in my opinion but it won't matter because he already has an album coming out. I always thought if anyone else were to get a recording contract it would be him. Constantine started the night with "Hard to Handle". It was a really good performance. It was just a little hard to hear with all the screaming going on. I personally was saving all my screaming for Bo but I found myself screaming for Constantine too. His next song was "My Funny Valentine". I didn't like this one the first time he sang it so it was not a favorite but it was still enjoyable. His last song of the evening was "Bohemian Rhapsody". He got to sing more of it than he did on the show so it was much better and it was cool how they did his head on the screen the same way Queen did in their video. I also enjoyed how they flashed his name across the screen during the fast parts of the song. Overall Constantine had one of the better performances of the night.
I wasn't really sure to expect from the next singer....
