I am the first to admit I am a huge reality television fan. I have at least tried to watch most shows at least once to give them a chance. Well congrats to Fox, they have done something that even the UPN or the WB could not accomplish. I am so disgusted by the new show Who's Your Daddy that I felt compelled to write this article in the hopes that others will be as disgusted as I am and not watch.
The premise of this show is quite simple on the surface. A young lady who was adopted at birth is introduced to several men and she must figure out which of these men is her real birth father. If she picks the right man she wins $100,000. If she picks the wrong man, then that man wins the money. Simple right?
I am myself adopted and I can tell you it is not that simple. This girl is either glutton for punishment or crazy. When you find out your adopted one of the first things you do is learn to search faces and wonder why they gave you up. You always wonder, "Could that be my father?" "Did they not want me?" I found out when I was twelve that I was adopted and even though I loved my adopted father I always wondered.
I finally met my birth father when I was 18 and having tons of people around for the moment I first looked into his eyes was not a moment I wanted to share with anyone. It is a very emotional time. You have a million questions you want to ask and emotions are so raw, it takes all you have to keep it together.
Now I am not foolish enough to believe that all reunions between birth parents and the children they gave up are happy. Until you see that person face to face you never know what will happen or how you will react. One moment you can be happy that your search is finally over but a few seconds later all you can think about is why did they give you up.
Fox has no right to exploit moments like this for ratings. I know what you are thinking, if people didn't volunteer for the show and people didn't watch there would be no show. I will bet any amount of money, that this girl is not ready for what happens to her. Plus to top it off, she might get close to one of the men and then he might not even be the right man.
Why this man and this girl would agree to this is beyond me. I am hoping this young lady has a wonderful adopted family to fall back on for support. I also hope that Fox will spring for her therapy for later on when she realizes what she has done.
I hope for everyone's sake this all turns out for the best. This can be one of the best or worse moments in an adopted individual's life. Shame on Fox for using what should be a private moment and exploiting it for financial gain. I for one won't be watching. I hope many others follow suit and show Fox that we don't want this sort of thing on our television sets.
