American Idol 4: Episode 16
The Top Twenty Results Show
By Jillian Kuras
March 3, 2005
Welcome to the results show here on American Idol! Tonight, four contestants will be eliminated, leaving us with sixteen. For those of you who may not remember, I predicted it would be Constantine and Joseph for the men, and Celena and Janay for the women.
Ryan begins by telling us that since tonight's result show is only a half hour, the contestants will not be singing for us tonight. Thank God! If we wanted to hear them sing again, we have voted for them.
Ryan tells us tonight's eliminations will start with the women. We are of course shown a recap of last night's show. The women are then shown seated on the couches out in the studio as Ryan briefly chats with the judges. Surprisingly, they actually offer some useful advice! That's a rarity these days.
Ryan starts with Randy and asks him to explain some of his critiques on last night's song selections. Ryan specifically mentions Carrie Underwood's song choice. Randy criticized her for doing Janis Joplin's Piece of my Heart, but Ryan reminds us that this song was actually a very successful hit for Faith Hill as well. I actually did not know this, and I'm guessing the judges didn't either. They all seemed surprised last night that Carrie would pick that particular song.
Randy explains that for the past three winners, it didn't matter what song they sang, it was the way they performed it and sang it that made them great. Ryan then asks Paula about her criticism of last night's Alicia Keys songs. Paula explains that it is tough to pick a current hit and sing it well. She says that if the contestants want to do a current hit that they should pick a song that is originally by the opposite gender. That's some good advice Paula!
And finally, Simon tells Ryan that even though he is not a fan of country music, that there as some really good country songs. He specifically singles out Lindsey and points out that her country song choice was not a good one.
Anyways, enough air time for them. Back to the real reason we are here- for the contestants. Before we even have a chance to blink, Ryan turns to the contestants and asks Celena Rae to step forward. She is then told that she received the lowest number of votes last night and will be going home. That's it? No recap of the judge's comments? No singling out the bottom few before breaking the bad news? It's 9:07 and we already have our first casualty. How very un-American Idol like.
Since Celena was one of my picks, I am not surprised to see her go. I do think potentially she could have done better, but her performances have only been average. And since she hasn't been shown on TV before this semi-final round, she was already at a disadvantage.
Celena tells Ryan that she was prepared for this, and that she was her genuine self last night. As the judges give Celena some advice for the future, she battles back tears. Ryan tells us we will find out which other woman will be going home… after the break.
After that wonderful break Ryan told us about, he briefly chats with the contestants. Nadia tells us she was so anxious and excited during her performance last night that she missed some of the notes she was going for. We noticed that Nadia, but clearly the judges didn't care.
Ryan then tells us he is now going to single out the lady who had the second lowest number of votes. He begins on the top couch with Jessica and tells her she is safe. Next in line is Amanda, who is also safe. Ryan also tells Carrie and Nadia that they are safe as well.
Next on the couch is Janay Castine. For some extremely odd reason, Ryan tells Janay that she is safe. Hold up! Janay?!? She should have gone home last week and didn't. She had another chance this week and completely blew it. And she's safe? I honestly don't get it. Who is voting for this girl? Seriously, I need to see a show of hands right now- who is voting for Janay Castine? Does she secretly have a family member who is in charge of the phone lines? This is crap.
