Amish In The City: Episode 2
Dirty Underwear and Horse Manure

The second installment of UPN's Amish in the City began with some heated arguments between the house guests. The Amish felt that they were being blamed for everything in the house that was dirty. Especially Randy. Randy was also accused of being too aloof and challenged to speak up and join the group. In response the soft spoken Randy withdrew even more. Maybe he is embarrassed by his rather high-pitched voice that doesn't seem to match his body. Maybe he just doesn't have much to say.
Eventually the house tensions erupted into a big face to face showdown between Whitney and Ruth. The two of them had it out in a shouting match. Whitney complained that she didn't (or more appropriately di-int) want to see Ruth's dirty underwear lying around. Ruth responded with a loud "I don't care!" And they proceeded to be all up in each other's face.
The big fight seemed to clear the air however and the group went on a little field trip to a local stable to ride some horses. Their method of transportation was the city bus. The Amish had never been on a bus before. I think we all know what a thrill it is to ride a city bus with the other top members of society. Randy enjoyed pulling the rope and causing the bus to pull over at every stop.
Once at the horse ranch the kids were assigned various tasks before they could ride. These chores included shoveling manure and mixing the horse feed. Of course the Amish were familiar with these chores and did them without complaining, but the city kids thought it kind of disgusting. Didn't I see the same scenario on several episodes of the Simple Life? Once the chores were completed they all mounted up and rode for a short time. Mose was hopeful for this to become a bonding experience, but he was disappointed. Whitney seemed the least adapted to riding and was bounced around like a rag doll.
The next adventure for the group was to go help out at a mentally disabled children's center. Reese was the ringleader for this outing, but several of the kids felt they would not be good at this task and so decided to stay home. Nick said that he would probably laugh and be awkward around the kids, so it would be better if he didn't go. Nice. The group that did go had a wonderful time and seemed to really enjoy the experience. Mose gained some respect for Reese and I think the whole group saw Randy come out of his shell.
The Amish said they felt the need to go to church, so they all did and brought Ariel with them. Most of them seemed to enjoy the church service. It had them missing their Amish life and wondering to themselves if they would return to that life. Mose however didn't like the more modern style worship service.
Meanwhile Kevan and Meagan began to heat up a little side romance. They were shown "snuggling" together all night long in bed. They both professed that "nothing happened." I think there is more to come in that little affair, although I think Kevan could do better. It seems Reese wishes that Kevan's affections were for him instead. Ewwww. And one side note. Reese, get a normal swim suit. Stop parading around like some outcast from the Siegfield and Roy show.
The big event they all enjoyed was a trip to the horse track. They were able to meet a jockey and watch him race. Miriam even placed a $5 bet, even though as others stated, the Amish believe in working for their money. Their horse and jockey actually won! Hey, maybe Miriam has found a new career. After the race they were treated to a concert by Arrested Development. They all danced and enjoyed the concert and meeting the band. Most of the Amish had never seen a concert before and Mose was amazed by it all. Mose seems to have a good heart, and got a kick out of laughing at himself when he was asked if he knew about Reggae. He replied, "No, I don't know him."
I was surprised to hear that the guests have been in the house for 3 or 4 weeks already. It doesn't seem like there has been a whole lot of activity for that length of time. Perhaps the producers thought there would be more moments of watchable TV just by throwing the group together in a house. Haven't they seen Big Brother 24/7 video streams? It's just people sitting around in a house brushing their teeth and lying in the sun. It's about as watchable as paint drying. I expect more little field trips for the group in future episodes.
