At the conclusion of last week's episode, the house guests received a tube mail informing them they would all be going to Amish country for a few days, as the roles would be reversed. This episode begins with the cry baby city kids refusing to go. Nick led the charge of wimps and wusses belly-aching about how he was NOT going to go. Meagan joined in saying how she was "not happy about this." Reese also refused to go saying he would not go some place where he couldn't have electricity and a bath. I've got it for you Reese, how about instead you have some electricity in your bath.
The only city kid showing any real enthusiasm for going to Amish country was Kevan, who exhibited a great attitude and was anxious to see what it was all about.
Whitney, after some initial frowns and moans, realized that the Amish had gone to her home and befriended her family, so it was only fair for her to go and see their families now.
Ariel, the ever-present idiot, began complaining about going to a farm where cows were. She complained about how machines milking cows was mean and a 24 hour a day torture for them. Jonas stepped in and challenged Ariel's ignorance by saying, "You can't handle it when someone doesn't agree with you…you are only listening to what some fanatics say…that is not what my farm does and not what most farms do." She wouldn't hear any of it, as usual, turning a deaf ear to the one of the two who had actually been on a farm. Jonas hung tough and would not let her get away with bad-mouthing dairy farmers. Way to go Jonas!
Reese continued to balk at the thought of going to a dirty farm. "All I have to wear is gay-ass jeans," he said. I couldn't have said it better myself.
Something tells me the producers stepped in and told the city kid cry-babies that this wasn't an optional trip. Because, the next thing we see is all of them on their way to Ohio.
When in Ohio, they drive along the country roads to Amish country. Mose really enjoys seeing the country again. Miriam sees her old boyfriend's house and his new wife. The kids are divided into three groups and are given different tasks to do. One group helps out with a fence; others view the making of candles, while others pitch hay. None of this is really happening on an actual Amish farm, and we don't really meet any true Amish people. Why? Well because the Amish aren't so excited about such a show and don't want to have anything to do with it or with cameras. They don't want their pictures taken. Didn't the producers watch the Harrison Ford movie "Witness"? So they are on farms with some people who maybe used to be Amish or are Amish-lite.
Nick continues to be a cry-baby through all of the work. He complains about the smell. Whitney wonders how they know which of the dairy cows are male or female. "Um, they are all female," the farmer says. After having the process explained to her, Ariel finally realizes it isn't really torture for the cows to be milked by a machine. Being milked is probably a lot better than exploding.
After working they all sit down to a pig roast. Well everyone except Ariel. She cannot stand the idea of them being so savage-like eating an animal in such fashion. So she walks off to the port-o-john and pukes. Then she sits in the van and sulks. Are there any casting directors from Spanish soap operas watching out there? We have your next over-acting, over-dramatic star.
After being back in the country, Ruth reflects on the fact that she is proud of who she is. The other Amish talk about how they have missed this simple life. That would be the simple life without Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie.
The next day the chores involve the shoveling of manure. But not for babies Reese and Nick who can't stand the smell and so go "help" the women in the kitchen. Too bad they weren't forced to put dresses on as well. Jonas calls Reese a "pansy" for refusing to do the work. Beautiful Jonas! He has some great lines like that during the whole show.
At dinner, Ruth's boyfriend, Marvin, shows up. Ruth is extremely excited to see him. He notices the changes in her and likes the new person she has become. I think the belly-button ring she now sports didn't hurt the deal either.
Meanwhile, Miriam and Ariel go for a drive and go past Miriam's family's house. She tells Ariel that she can't go in and see them because it would be disrespectful and they wouldn't want any cameras around. But when she sees her mom in the yard, she can't resist, and goes and talks to her-off camera. It was good for her to receive encouragement from her family.
On the farm, Meagan falls in love with a golden retriever puppy and decides to buy it and take it home with her. Ruth and Marvin have a sad farewell. They each tell the other, "I love you."
Once back in the city, Mose talks about how he is now for sure leaning towards going back to the Amish.
As the show concludes, a tube mail brings Jonas his GED results. But, we must wait until next week to find out his score.
