The Apprentice 3: Episode 16
Leadership Style and Respect
Recap By Teri Sue
May 13, 2005
This week is a continuation of the Final Task with the two female finalists Kendra and Tana.
Tana’s task is to host and oversee a mini Olympics which is for the promotion of New York cities bid to host the 2012 Olympics.
Kendra will host and oversee Best Buy's video tournament for promotion of a new video game with one of the main sponsors being Play Station.
Both are very involved scheduling tasks which should showcase each apprentice wannabe's leadership skills to the max and their ability to remain calm and cool under hectic conditions.
We were left last week with Kendra's task in serious trouble.
Last week, also, brought us the good side of Tana's abilities and the negative of Kendra. My guess when tonight's episode began was that they would reverse it out and have the "good" highlights of Kendra and her team...and, the difficult components of Tana and her team.
Last week we were left hanging with Play Station's indecision as to whether to pull out their sponsorship from Kendra's project. The Play Station executive was not pleased at all with the accommodations for the Vendors.
Also, in last week's recap, I said we should remember what Tana said when she told her team to go ahead and make decisions on their own. Not to wait around to find her; that she trusted them. Well, later on in last week's episode, Tana, during her personal face time with the camera, said she wouldn't hesitate to fire her team if they screw up.
THIS WEEK begins:
Kendra and one of her team members are in the throes of fixing the Vendor's room. Michael assures Kendra, as she is telling him where to place things, that she can trust him. The job will get done. Kendra is convinced that she can leave Michael with the room arrangement. She ventures onto other tasks.
First, I have to say that Tana has had a wad of gum in her mouth throughout this entire 16 week process. And, the ever present gum is dominating tonight.
Tana has assigned Kristen to oversee the brochures which will have the bios of the athletes on it. Kristen describes her plan for the design and Tana is overjoyed.
Chris and Brian are working in the arena area arranging the wall signs and decorations. They are working on the spacing so it won't appear lopsided. Then, into the arena comes Kristen. OK, huffingly walking there. She appears to be about to take charge. Yep, true. She starts pointing out how things should be different. The guys pretty much ignore her; tell her this is their responsibility. The air breathes of hostility between Kristen and the men. In comes Tana and starts in on the guys that Kristen said so and so and so. Finally, Kristen huffs out in the same manner she huffed in.
Tana is having major difficulty controlling her team. The best way to describe it is as a drill Sergeant with first week recruits.
I am going to use a Kendra term…Holy Molely. We get a fast forward type of viewing as the video gaming room comes to life. Fantastic. The main room, where the competition is taking place, is set up as a boxing ring. The game used in the competition as you'll remember is the boxing game - Fight 2. The competitors will feel like they are actually competing in a ring as they climb through the ropes to access the center where they will play the game. The competition will be broadcast on a Big Screen TV and other monitors strategically placed around the room.
The Play Station executive returns and is taken to the Vendor - Sponsor room downstairs. The transformation from the run down, sleazy disco look it had is amazing; it has been turned in to a sharp, crisp, vibrant atmosphere. The PS exec is pleased and is now confident in Kendra's ability.
George gives his camera face time saying that Kendra has handled it very well to this point. The execs are pleased. George gives it a thumbs up so far.
Do you get the drift of what the editing is showing? We are being presented the overly obvious that Kendra and team are doing superb while Tana and team are falling apart. This means the producers want us to believe one of the following:
Kendra will win or Tana will win because it is so obvious that Kendra should win
Or that Kendra will really win because they know we will think the producers are trying to throw us off the outcome. Even though the "hiring" is suppose to be a surprise and even the Donald doesn't ever know till the final day, sometimes making his decision at the last moment.
