Mandy Smith Blow Out 2: Episode 1
I Love The Smell Of Hair Product In The Morning

Recap By Mandy Smith
June 3, 2005
It's finally time for season 2 of "Blow Out", the reality television show that takes us inside the world of hair salons. I've been watching all the marathons and catching up with my favorite stylists from the Jonathan Salon in Beverly Hills. After all the drama that was season 1, can this season come close to being as entertaining as the first? We've see Jonathan laugh, cry, call everyone bro, get stressed to the point of needing a few Xanax, and go ballistic on slacking salon employees. But have no fear, because from watching the first episode tonight; I knew the drama was going to go above and beyond what season 1 had to offer.

The show opens up with Jonathan Antin, owner of the Jonathan Salons and celebrity stylist, giving us a rundown of what happened during season one and where things are headed now. In case you didn't believe that celebrity stylist bit, he's got the camera footage to prove it.
There is Jonathan working on the hair of some of the rich and famous, such as Nicky Hilton, Leann Rimes, Lisa Rinna, among others. While it may be second to none, Jonathan has a full appreciation that he opened a salon in 3 weeks and he's not a millionaire. It's now flashback time for how the salon opened, and what happened during season 1, while Jonathan provides the narration. He begins to reminisce about the problems he had opening the salon; memories I would be trying to have erased with some kind of therapy if I were Jonathan. There's the video footage again of his inept construction crew breaking water lines and the foreman speaking of how the salon will never be ready in 2 weeks. We see the red carpet party for the salon's opening. Jonathan still questions if he has brought the right people along for this ride but he's busier than he's ever been; juggling work between the 2 salons, photo shoots, and fashion shows. Add in that Jonathan is helping his sister open a Pussycat Dolls Club in Las Vegas and working with investors to launch his own multimillion dollar Jonathan product line; you have to wonder when this man has time to sleep.

Jonathan admitted at the end of season 1 that he might have been a bit harsh at times to the employees or expected too much from them. Employees were fired, some whined constantly, and others asked to go back to the West Hollywood salon without giving Jonathan more than a day's notice. Who is left and who had to go? Of course, the most famous firing of the show was Brandon, whose appearance in the opening night footage was edited quite nicely. Jonathan says he doesn't know where Brandon is now nor does he care. Considering the interviews Brandon has given various media outlets about Brandon's salon, there is no love lost between these two. Jonathan talks about how he and Jen McDonald didn't quite see eye to eye but there are no hard feelings. Jen has moved on. Alicia, one of the more outspoken stylists who seemed to complain about the lack of assistants to anyone who would listen - including clients, is no longer with the salon. Jonathan is more diplomatic about it than I would have been; stating that Alicia had another agenda in her life and hair wasn't ever at the top of her list of priorities. He feels like she pissed away her opportunity. 3 employees that were hired on opening day are no longer with the salon.

It's a lot of work splitting his time between his two salons but Jonathan loves it. He has the staff to support him as well. Annie is the manager of the Beverly Hills salon and Rosie is the manager of the West Hollywood salon. As Jonathan puts it, "They are my angels and I am Charlie," in a nod to "Charlie's Angels." Alyn is new and his one of the best hairstylists Jonathan has ever had. Alyn is perfect in Jonathan's words; he's never late, he makes tons of money, and he's great with hair. Jason, the NYC hairdresser from last season, is still here. He's spending part of his time in Beverly Hills and the rest in NYC. Jonathan is already talking about the day he's going to need Jason in the Beverly Hills salon 3 weeks out of a month. Kiara is working hard, doing some of the best work she's ever done and Jonathan believes it's because she had the baby she was pregnant with most of season 1. It's a beautiful baby girl, who we get to see on camera briefly. Kimberly has a chair still, after last season's question of if she was ready for one, but she isn't bringing in enough customers. Kimberly says she is struggling and what she needs right now is Jonathan's support. Kevin is one of the 3 busiest stylists Jonathan has between both salons but he's "all about the chicks" according to Jonathan. Kelly is the hairstylist Jonathan saw and said, "Wow! Are you kidding me? She's a hairstylist? Where's she been all my life? But you know we've got to keep it strictly business; if you know what I mean. Nothing personal."
