Preface
I decided to take on the recapping Brat Camp for purely personal reasons. I thought it would be a great exercise for me and my 12-year old daughter Amanda - "Hard to Handle". Amanda has given me a little more than a person of my short-temper can handle. She is a great kid; but I must admit that I really have to control the urges I have to submit her application for Brat Camp IV. We'll be watching the shows together and Amanda will offer a "teen age perspective". She missed her chance to contribute her thoughts on the opening show because she is on a mission trip with her church group, working with "Habitat for Humanity" in the sweltering summer heat, across the other side of the state in Pittsburgh, Pa. (see I told you she was a great kid). She will be back next week to chime in. With that said, I present to you the premiere episode of Brat Camp.
November 14th, Day 1
Welcome to SageWalk, a therapeutic wilderness camp situated in the high desert of Central Oregon, 60 miles from the nearest city. This will be the home for at least 40 days of 9 juvenile delinquents whose parents have reached their wits end and have in a last ditch effort decided to send their child here. Overseeing the project will be Tony Randazzo, aka "Glacier Mountain Wolf" (GWF). He has over 5 years experience in the field, and will be helped by a staff consisting of "Little Big Bear" (LBB), "Mountain Wind" (MW), "Boulder" (B) and "Stalking Cougar"(SC) [God, I love these names]. Together they will remove all the kid's distractions (TV, friends, parents, etc.) and will attempt to strip away the negative behaviors and rebuild them into something positive. Hopefully returning sweet, loving sons and daughters to their respective families (or at least a close facsimile).
Bring On The Brat-worsts Shawn, 17, "Steals From Mom". Shawn's parents don't have any clue as to the extent of their son's drug abuse. Shawn was adopted and it appears that he has issues with his birth mom and is projecting them onto his adoptive mom.
Lexie, 17, "Hostile Outcast". She had a "bad experience" in the 7th grade. She feels that school and grades don't matter. She hangs out with the wrong crowd, often staying out until 3 in the morning. Upon arrival Lexie freaks out. GMW calmly waits her out.
Derek, 14, "Hyperactive". He has ADHD and refuses to take his medication for it. He has little respect for his parents often telling them to shut up. His grades have gone from A's to F's. He doesn't appear to be all there, but I have a feeling he was playing a little to the cameras!!!
Heather, 16, "Habitual Runaway". She arrives at camp hung over from the previous night's binge. She abuses both drugs and alcohol and hangs with the wrong crowd. Her biological Mom died from a drug overdose. She was then adopted by her aunt. Heather not only looks like her mom, but is on the same bad pathway in life.
Frank, 15, "Violent Temper". Frank has no father and is extremely angry. He started with drugs and drinking at age 12. He frequently threatens his mother and he feels that the cards are stacked against him. His built up anger often leads to violent eruptions. Frank immediately wants his bag with all his stuff. "Stalking Cougar" who is an expert in primitive living skills says that he won't need any of that.
Nick, 14, "Tried to Stab His Twin". He doesn't respect authority and shows no respect to his Mom, often calling her a "bitch". Nick wants to be better than his twin brother in everything but suffers from dyslexia and feels that he is stupid.
Lauren, 17, "Self-Destructive Drug User". She smokes pot and ditches school and has been arrested for DUI. Her father died suddenly when she was 11 and has gone downhill since. Lauren was hospitalized when she was caught looking for the best ways to kill herself. Lauren is busted at camp for possession of marijuana and is taken to the portable toilet where it is flushed down, adding new meaning to the term "Porta POTty".
Isaiah, 17, "Angry Punk". He drinks, destroys family furniture. His parents are divorced and he blames his mother. Everything is her fault according to him.
Jada, 15, "Compulsive Liar". She lies to get what she wants and appears to be spoiled rotten. Father is in denial. Mother says she sleeps over at "that boy's house". Mother feels that she feeds off of deviant behavior.
Before entering SageWalk all kids must read and agree to the rules that include:
