Curb Your Anger

Recap by Teri Campbell
August 16, 2005
Back at the Mortuary we find that tempers have yet to subside. Rick decides to call an Anger Management Specialist to come talk to the employees of Poway-Bernardo Mortuary.

Anger Management Day: While predicting how everyone will accept the specialist, Rick let's us know that Chuck will have a problem, Emily, Shonna and himself will be very open and John will be non-responsive. John thinks he and Shonna have the issues, Shonna says that Rick has anger "issues" and that David flies off the handle. All in all, they all could use this 'intervention'.

The specialist arrives and goes through each employee and finds out what their views are concerning the other employees. Melissa is also brought in and asked about her feelings towards Rick, which she says she has none. When the same question is asked by Rick, he confirms that he still has emotional feelings for her, to wit, the specialist tells him that it will be hard to work together.
Uh..hello? I think we knew this from the day they broke up. Perhaps the specialist should have watched the show before she arrived. In any event, Rick starts to tell the specialist all the problems the other employees have. We go through flashbacks that will verify all that Rick is proclaiming.

Now we go through each employee talking about Chuck and all his problems. We find Shonna and Emily breaking down when talking about their dad.

The specialist sums up that everyone needs to make a choice to change. Surprisingly enough, they could have hired me to tell them that, and for a lot less money, I am sure!

Now, here comes Chuck. He unloads all his feelings about Rick and his daughters. He lets Ava (the specialist) know that his daughters yell at him all the time. Then dives into Rick and how he has let him [Chuck] down by his actions with the relationship with Melissa.

Ava says she will teach them all anger management exercises to help with the abuse that is going around the mortuary.

We get ready for the group meeting. Everyone already thinks it's going to turn into a brawl. Each person now gets to say, in one sentence, a weakness and a strength each employee has. Everyone takes a shot at Chuck and obviously he is overwhelmed. So we go to Rick and Chuck picking out puppets to role play a situation. They have to be the other person while they act it out. Chuck is making his alligator move and speak for him, while Rick's puppet stays still. Chuck is diggin' this role-play stuff. Through the puppets, they decide that they could sit down and figure out what is really going on between them, and how to fix it so they can work together in peace. However, during break time both men say that even if they sit down and talk, nothing will really change.

Family Therapy: Melissa has arrived and all three girls sit down with Chuck and use puppets to talk about disrespect and how the girls treat Chuck badly. Every time Chuck speaks, one of the girls jumps in and tells him what he is doing wrong. Ava has to tell the girls to give him some extra time and love because he hasn't got anyone in his life. Switch to the girls telling their dad the bad things he has done to them and continues to do to them and their kids. Tears begin to flow. Lots of flashbacks begin to show the times where he really does verbally abuse the girls. It is decided that Chuck creates the fights because he thinks he isn't worthy of these girls. They all decided to work on the way they try to treat each other. Chuck really never saw all this coming, and never really understood the way he treated his girls. He has always been a bad father, but he can change, but it's all up to him.

So the gang has had a long, and much anticipated, therapy session to work out some of the problems in not only the Wissmiller family, but in the Poway-Bernardo Mortuary Family. Some of the information was hard to swallow, but needed to be said. We all know that Chuck took the brunt of the anger, but it was time for him to learn that he can't be so abusive to all those around him, because of what has happened to him in the past. Hopefully this session will bring out a better side of Chuck, but in all honesty I really think the old adage of "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" is the pure essence of Chuck's persona. Hopefully, this time I am wrong about the old man.

That's it for this episode of Family Plots. See you all next Sunday, 9pm on the A& E channel for a new episode where everyone begins to think about their own final arrangements. Goodbye, and be good to each other!
