Well looks like things are back to normal, well, as normal as can be at the Poway-Bernardo Mortuary. Tonight's episode deals with the cast dealing with their own mortality. While Rick decides to make jewelry out of his dead son's ashes, the Wissmiller's decided to get together and buy a family plot, if they could ever decided on anything unanimously.
Emily and Shonna both let us in on their daily habit, which happens to be reading the obituaries. Emily likes to know where they grew up, how many kids they had and so forth. Shonna just hopes to find that nobody is her age or younger. David is giving the overview of what the day has in store. The first thing happening is Chuck and John went to pick up a man from the hospital who was 53 when he died. Shonna says that anytime her dad must pick up someone who is younger than him, he starts to ponder his own mortality with questions like, "Why am I here and they're not?" To work in this business and NOT think about the 'whys' of life and death, would be abnormal.
A Full Life
A family comes in and David helps them prepare for arrangements. They talk about how she has lived such a full life and has seen so much through her 102 years.
Too Close To Home
Chuck is bringing the man from the hospital to the mortuary and still talking about how 53 is just too young to die. When they unzip him for Shonna to prepare him for viewing, Chuck realizes that he knew the man and just had coffee with him 2 weeks ago. As Chuck seems filled with remorse for the man dying too young, he takes another drag off his cigar. Which makes me wonder……Chuck? You do know smoking kills, right?
Pan back to David talking to the Martinson's (who's 102 year old mother died) and letting them know that the cemetery confirmed her burial plot. Mr. Martinson lets David know that they have a family plot and everyone lays under one big headstone that says MARTINSON and then a marker below for each family member buried there. Shonna briefly jumps in and tells us how she likes the idea of family being buried together, even if some people say it doesn't matter because you are dead anyhow. David walks the Martinson's to their car. Then flash to the garage where Rick and Shonna take a smoke break and talk about how cool family plots are. Then John eerily says that he would like to be placed in his family plot, but first exhuming the body of his dead son and having him placed in his [John's] arms before final burial.
Going Home
Shonna begins to make up Mrs. Martinson for burial and Shonna and Chuck begin talking about how they are in the business so they should be looking into family plots. Chuck offers the idea to Missy to all get together and decide about a plot, especially since the Wissmiller brother will be in town. First they will have to find a time to meet, before they can even try to agree on a site. The Martinson's bring in the 102 year old woman's clothes and glasses for Shonna to finish dressing her and David lets us know that after 102 years Mrs. Martinson has finally been laid to rest.
Plotting the Plot
Looks like the whole family is in town so Shonna calls a family meeting to decide on final decisions. Everyone is different in their after-life beliefs so it's going to be a little bit of a fight. A fight to the finish, if you will.
Dust to Diamonds
Rick decides to send his son's remains to a jeweler to be made into a diamond. Randy just died last year and hopefully could bring closure to Rick's pain. A representative brings first the certificate that states the remains of Randolph Sadler have been made into a diamond. This brings Rick to tears. After he takes a minute, he returns to see the beautiful rings and realize that his son is part of these rings. He had earrings made for his daughter, Lexi, and a ring made for himself and Randy's Mom. He goes to show Shonna the certificate and Shonna breaks down. Both her and Rick start to cry, and surprisingly enough, so do I. She looks at the jewelry and realizes that it was worth the wait (it took about a year). Rick then asks Shonna to tell Missy to come into the kitchen.
Diamonds Are Forever
Since Randy and Missy were close, Rick wanted to make sure that everyone got to see his 'essence'. Rick starts to cry as he shows Missy the earrings and rings. Again, a tear comes to my eye. Shonna had hopes that Rick and Melissa could come to a point where they were civil to each other, and maybe this is the moment that will make it happen. Family smoke break. Everyone gets to put in a thought about what the rings would mean to other families who have lost loved ones.
The Plot Thickens
The Wissmiller's decide to head to Dearborn Cemetery to decide on after life placement. They all give their sentiments on what they feel is appropriate for them. Back at the mortuary John & David joke about the Wissmiller's agreeing on where they all will be buried. Rick realizes that he never really thinks about his mortality. He decides that it's time to get some things cleared up in his life while he can. While he's not afraid to die, he doesn't want to. Life is too much fun! John realizes the future is stressful and the past is depressing (he also lost a son) so he needs to focus on the now and take care of what needs to be done now. After the meeting, there was no final decision and Shonna decides she'll buy the plot and Chuck can foot the bill. Mom Wissmiller is happy wherever she lies, as long as it's not by Chuck.
Aw, the sentiment of the close knit family. Chuck said it best. "One big happy family!" Excuse me while I am choking on my beverage.
That's it for this episode of Family Plots. I'll be in touch when the next episode airs and until then, goodbye, and be good to each other!
