Hit Me Baby, One More Time: Episode 2
Number 1 With A Bullet!
Recap By Mandy Smith
June 10, 2005
Considering the ratings for the debut of "Hit Me Baby," I can see I'm not the only one out here loving this new reality television hit. This week's episode was one the most anticipated shows of the week and the excitement level was high. Did it live up to the hype? You better believe it.
From the minute Vernon Kay took the stage, the energy in the studio was electrifying. The audience was hyped up and ready for their favorite stars to appear on stage. Vernon is quick to let the audience know that the favorite to win last week, Arrested Development, was the winner. Will the favorite from the Hit Me Baby poll at NBC win tonight? No one knows yet but it's time for the performers of the night to hit the stage. Once again, it's 5 artists who once were at the top of the charts and are coming back to give it their all. Performing this week are The Knack, Haddaway, Tommy Tutone, the Motels, and Vanilla Ice. First the artists will perform the song that made them famous; second will be a current hit song of their choice.
Starting the night off is The Knack, the band once named the next Fab 4 by Rolling Stone magazine. The song that made them a hit was of course "My Sharona", their huge hit from 1978. The song was a number one hit and stayed at #1 for 6 weeks. Their debut album hit platinum in 5 weeks and over 6 million albums have been sold worldwide. The song was a hit again when used in the movie "Reality Bites" and even the US President George W. Bush has the song in his Ipod. With a photo of the band in their prime on the screen behind them, the band rises from beneath the stage. They're looking great, dressed in all black attire, and hit the stage with their instruments. They sound just as good now as they did then. The song is perfectly executed and right on key. The crowd is dancing along and they are a great start to the show. Vernon asks the question so many have asked since 1978, "What happened to your sharona?" Doug Fieger, the lead vocalist, informs the world that "sharona" is one of the most successful real estate agents in southern California now besides being the mother of 2 beautiful children. We learn that The Knack is going to perform Jet's "Are You Going to Be My Girl" as their second song for the night. The crowd obviously approves and they are off to get ready for performance number 2.
Up next is Haddaway, one of the few artists who performed on the UK version of Hit Me Baby as well. Any fan of Saturday Night Live knows what song is going to be his choice for the night; "What Is Love?" The 1993 dance hit was a worldwide success and garnered Haddaway 28 million fans from around the world. He arrives on the stage and asks the audience how they are doing. He also tells them that they need to do the head motion made famous by the Roxbury Boys from Saturday Night. It's a great way to get the audience involved. He begins his song, performing with the same flair he did years ago, and is flanked by beautiful female dancers. He's dancing and singing when all the sudden the background dancers begin the head motion. It's funny and as the song ends, the provocatively dressed women pose around him. Vernon mentions the performance is "very cheeky" as he comes on stage to join Haddaway. Vernon asks what impact the SNL spoof had on the song. Haddaway replies, "It kicked ass. It really gave it a future. It was great; it was fabulous." His song later is going to be Britney Spears' "Toxic", which had me wondering how he might pull that off.
It's time for the song that launched a million prank phone calls. That's right, it's Tommy Tutone and his huge hit "867-5309 Jenny". It was a top 5 hit in 1982 and the phone number had to be retired. Tommy Tutone takes the stage to a very enthusiastic crowd. The first beat of the song starts and people begin going crazy. The band is dressed in retro chic clothes and look good together despite wearing different styles of clothing. Tommy's voice is a little different but it's overall a good performance. The crowd is singing along with the whole song. The screen behind the band is randomly displaying the numbers from the song. Vernon asks if it is true that Tommy found the number written on a bathroom wall. Tommy explains that he was the one who wrote it on the bathroom wall. Their choice of songs is "Small Things" by Blink 182 and again, the crowd seems to like this choice of song.
