Rock Star: INXS - Episode 10
Passion, Talent and Training
Recap by Gayl Killough
August 4, 2005
The contestants are shown arriving back at the mansion after the
elimination show. I recognize the clothes they wore during elimination.
It is a sunny day and there is a buffet table of food waiting for them.
They give a toast to Heather and Daphna. They were very surprised and
thrown off by the double elimination. Brandon makes the comment that
they don't know what to expect, no one could go home next week or all
three could go home. My thoughts on three leaving were I really hope the
ratings are not that bad. If you are not watching this show, please
watch. Get your friends and family to watch. I like this show and I
don't want to be shortchanged.
They congratulate Jessica for being saved two weeks in a row. Jessica
says that this is what she wants to do and that she is going to fight.
Good for her.
It does help me to know who wants to be there and who
doesn't. I rather see a contestant that I like less, but who wants to be
there to stay over someone who does not want to be there, regardless of
how talented he or she is. But that is just me.
While everyone is sitting down and eating, a lady walks in and asks
"where is her little brother"? Marty is very surprised to be getting a
visit from sister. Yeah! The producers of the Monday episode know that
Marty exist. I am happy to see him getting some airtime on Monday. He
writes an interesting blog, so he is not boring, but maybe he is quiet.
Mig comments that if the reward for doing really well is a visit from a
family member, he is going to rehearse all week. That is what you are
supposed to be doing anyway Mig, but I know what Mig means. I almost
suspect that they sent in Marty's sister in order to create a storyline
for him, but I am glad to see him happy.
Marty's shows his sister his free guitar and she shows him letters from
his family. Marty seems very touched and says that this completely
rejuvenates him. His sister seems blown away that Marty is hanging with
INXS and Marty says everyone is like family, and that INXS is like
brothers. Marty comments that he realized that he is not only
auditioning to be a member of INXS, but that he is also auditioning to
become a member of the INXS family.
Suzie is crying, she seems to cry easily, because seeing Marty's sister
made her realize how much she missed her own family and that she has not
seen them for a while. She is comforted by knowing that she has family
that supports her. Mig is there to comfort Suzie. I have noticed from
the earlier episodes that Mig and Suzie seem to have a bond and Suzie
volunteers to be Mig's sister while they are still both there.
The special clinic for this week is vocal training. Dave brings in his
vocal coach, Ron Anderson for the contestants. Finally I say. I think
the contestants should have had this the first week. I would have loved
to have known what a vocal coach would have done with Neal. In theory
since these are more experienced contestants, maybe they should not need
vocal training. But many of these contestants have been singing on the
side or more as a hobby and may not have ever had vocal training. Plus,
even if one has knowledge of vocal training, I think every singer needs
help from a vocal coach every so often. It is too easy to fall into bad
habits and it is hard to judge oneself, so singers need advice from the
outside.
Jessica is shown first and she admits that she has never had any vocal
training. This makes sense to me. I try to judge the contestants'
voices through my television by the way they sing their songs, but I can
really only speculate on what I hear. I don't care what the singing
contest it is, I want to hear the vocal training of each contestant.
This helps me to determine what raw talent a contestant may have or not
have. Besides passion, raw talent is the most important criteria for me.
I want to know what a singer is capable of before I predict his or her
future.
Brandon makes the comment about Jessica that.....
