Rock Star: INXS - Episode 14
Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone
Recap by Gayl Killough
August 10, 2005
Tuesdays are the performance episodes. Since there are fewer contestants
and perhaps since the behind the scenes episode was moved to VH1, there
are short clips of each contestant rehearsing before the actual
performance.
Suzie is first with R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion". She did a
rearrangement of the song with some help from J.D. Dave says she has her
game on and the arrangement was a brilliant move. INXS is impressed and
state that J.D. did her a favor. They tell her it was her best
performance and that the arrangement helped to showcase her voice. Kirk
says it was a dream that he did not want to wake up from.
I absolutely love this. Having heard this particular song a few thousand
times too many, I really appreciate a fresh arrangement. I never thought
I would like this song again. Suzie appears to be an acquired taste, but
I think she has really grown in this competition.
Mig is second with Free's "All Right Now". Mig has given up his first
choice on several occasions now. Dave says that he want Mig to fight for
a song. INXS tell him they want to see him sing a ballad.
This was an alright performance. I still love Mig though.
J.D. is third with Seal's "Crazy". Dave says ambitious choice and INXS
are glad that he did not get crazy with his stage antics.
Even though I love Seal's version and I did not care for this
arrangement, this is the first performance of J.D. that I can say I
loved. It was the right balance for me.
Jessica is fourth with Nirvana's "Come As You Are". It is a bad sign when
Dave starts out praising the house band. They tell her that they did not
feel the passion of the song from her. They then tell her that she is
light years from where she started.
This was not a bad as I thought it would be, but I think Jessica has not
tried to sing Nirvana before. Nirvana is tricky. Her style was too much
like the melancholy undercurrent of the song and it was wrong for the
lyrical line of the song. Jessica is out of league at this point of the
competition.
Jordis is fifth with Eric Clapton's "Layla". They tell her that it was
not her best performance, but that they appreciated that she took risks
every week.
I would rather listen to other songs by Jordis. This song was used to
tease me when I was younger and I have bad memories connected to this
song. My birth name is Gayla. I drop the "a" so I can go by Gayl. My
name is a variation on Gayle. Like Diana is for Diane, Gabriella for
Gabrielle, or Christina is for Christine. However, thanks to the
popularity of Layla and Kayla, people tend to mistakenly think my birth
names rhymes with those names and it does not. Slight difference, but it
means something to me. Plus, it still hurts me till this day to
remember the rewritten version of this song with my birth name
substituted for Layla sung by bullies that used it to make horrible fun
of me. I normally love Clapton, but I only remember the teasing versions
and a great song was ruined for me.
Brandon is sixth with The Rolling Stones'.....
