Recap by Gayl Killough
August 17, 2005
Tonight is performance night and is acoustic this time. The show starts off with a recap of the song collaboration that was shown on the Sunday show. The contestants are asked about their reaction to the recap and afterthoughts of the challenge. J.D. was himself. Marty impressed me that he is willing to defend himself and set things straight. Marty is also playing to win this. Just not J.D. wants to win. Several contestants are trying this to win.

First up is Jordis. She is singing "Knocking on Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan. Dave and INXS think she is an emerging star. They loved her performance.

While I do agree that Jordis is an emerging star, I just thought this performance was alright. I think I will just stick listening to the original for this one.
It will be interesting to see if going first hurts Jordis any. With American Idol, I think because that show drags, it seems the middle performances are forgotten. With this show, it seems like whoever sang first has to fight more to be remembered, especially if there are great performances at the end.

Second is Jessica. She is singing "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia. Dave and INXS seemed pleased. Jessica thought this song played to her strengths.

First off, Jessica is wearing a whole dress. Jessica is sounding better to me on pop instead of rock. Her stage presence is understated and appropriate for once. This is her best performance. I am actually glad that she stayed so I could see this from her. However, it won't be enough to keep her out of my bottom three. I can tell already.

Third is Ty. He is singing "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart. Dave and INXS liked his performance but were puzzled by him sticking out his tongue. Ty even shows he can roll his tongue in an interesting way as well.

Ty is a great vocalist, but his mood seemed not right. He was doing weird stage antics.

Fourth is Suzie. She is singing "Bring It On Home" by Sam Cooke. Dave and INXS are impressed with her and that the song really suited her. They tell her that she has one of the best voices in the competition.

I agree that Suzie has one of the best voices and she keeps getting better. She is also has a pop rock feel to her style that I think is still compatible with INXS. I don't think she is the best fit for INXS, but she is still a contender for me.

I have to gripe at whoever does the sound balance of these songs. Suzie has a beautiful and soothing voice that has layers to it. Only the top layer of her voice is above the sound of the background music so that it gives it an artificial blah quality to the overall sound. I have to strain to really hear her whole voice and I don't think most people will bother to do that. I noticed this with Anthony on American Idol and I have noticed this with others who have a similar type of soothing and also layered voice, the mike needs to be louder or the background music needs to be softer. Some may argue that her voice is just soft, but I have seen enough of this now that I don't think that is the case. Her type of voice is an exception to whatever guidelines sound mixers use to determine proper balance for the television audience. Please adjust the sound balance for Suzie and other singers like her.

Fifth is Marty. He is singing "…Baby One More Time" as popularly sung by Britney Spears. Marty was totally shocked to get this song selection. So was everyone else. Dave told Marty that it bothered him that he dug this version. Marty says that if he sung this song on the south side of Chicago that he would get beat up, but that it is a good song. INXS tells him that they wanted him to go outside his box and that he did well. Dave counteracts that the song selection was not only outside the box, but outside the venue as well.

There are singers I love, singers I hate, and then there are entertainers that I try my best to ignore. I think this is a much better song than Britney deserved, I had no idea. I really enjoyed this performance and props to Marty for sitting there restrained on a stool while singing it. I love his raspy voice too. He could improve his technique, but he is the real deal.

Sixth is Deanna. She is singing "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt. Dave tells her that he can not imagine anyone who could not love her and Deanna answers that it has happened. INXS notices that she was nervous, but that she still did a great job.

This song was meant to challenge.....
