Rock Star: INXS - Episode 20
Solo Work, Team Work and Talent
Recap by Gayl Killough
August 24, 2005
Brooke announces that there is a full house audience. Garry Gary Beers is
not there because he had to attend to some personal matters, but he will
be there next week.
Down to the final 7. Since there is a little extra time, the recap of the
behind the scenes episode seems to go a little longer. Originally
everyone was told they need to write an original song, but when it came
to song selection, only two slots for an original song were available. I
think that INXS wanted everyone to fight for the slots, but Suzie’s idea
of picking names out of hat, undermined that. MiG and Deanna won the
chance to do originals songs. Suzie later had regrets and asked to
trade, but MiG and Deanna fought to keep the originals songs. Deanna
worked with Ty and they repeat Paul of the House Band’s comment about Ty
having a forceful personality and taking over. I was curious if that
comment would be repeated because I think it really hurts both Deanna
and Ty.
Suzie is up first with “Start Me Up” by The Rolling Stones. Oh, going
first on this show is bad in terms of being remembered, but Suzie pulls
out everything that she has. She even went into the Performers’ Pen and
dived into the audience. INXS stands up at the end for her. They all
have smiles on their faces. Dave is very pleased and tells her that he
can not believe that she has ever been in the bottom three. They tell
her that she always pulls through with the vocals and tonight was
exceptional.
I think Suzie has become my favorite in this competition. She does have
more of a pop style than rock style, but to be honest, despite the
rockstar in the show title, INXS is as much pop as they are rock. Suzie
may not be much of rocker compared to the others, but she does still fit
INXS. This song was mostly belting out and did not have the differences
in vocal volume, so the recording mix was appropriate for her tonight.
She sounded great and went all out. I admire her fighting spirit.
J.D. is up second with “Cold As Ice” by Foreigner. He rearranges it a
little to suit his voice and style. Dave and INXS tell him that they
love his interpretation of it to classic to modern. Dave asks if it was
a matter of interpretation or if he missed some notes, and J.D. says it
was part of his interpretation.
We are to the point of the competition where it is going to come down to
personal style over talent. It is odd that I read on the message boards
about people not like Suzie’s performances and comparing it to a lounge
act. I don’t agree. While I think lounge is overused to the point I am
ready to ban the word, if anyone is a lounge act for me, it is J.D. I
have to overcome my dislike of his stage antics to appreciate his
talent. Also, everyone has a strong style and they all make the songs
fit the style. Deanna changes the key to suit her unusual range. I feel
like J.D. makes a bigger point out of everything that he does.
Putting that aside, I could really see J.D.’s original style, this song
really suited him. I actually really do like his original style, it
just that it seems like he trying to fit what INXS want so badly, that
he masks his originality. On the other hand, INXS is looking for someone
who can mesh with their style, so that is not a bad thing for a
contestant to do in this contest. I just personally don’t like. I think
he is natural showman, if he could lose some of the Elvis impersonation
stuff and just be himself, there is an excellent chance that he would
win me over.
Deanna is up third with her original song titled “My Truth”. Dave
comments that Ty looked like a proud papa when she was singing. INXS
liked it but was worried about her staying in her comfort zone.
This is classic Deanna and showcases what she does well. I would rather
her see her do her own stuff instead of watching her try to be like INXS.
Ty is fourth with “Proud Mary.....
