Rock Star: INXS - Episode 21
Encores and Elimination

Recap by Gayl Killough
August 25, 2005
Tonight was a special one hour elimination show. I am not sure why exactly, but I assume they wanted to show more of the behind the scenes footage and hear more from the contestants. The encore performances from the online voting that I mistakenly thought would be tonight will occur at some point later. They are being very vague about when they will occur, which makes it that more difficult to keep up with this show. I am sure that it is supposed to add suspense, but fans like to know what is going on too.

Well, since I messed up, I deserve to be in the bottom three myself, but no one wants to hear me sing, so I will save everyone from that punishment. Jordis feels like she deserves to be in the bottom three and I appreciate how self-aware that she is, especially for her younger age.

Everyone else is feeling good about their performance, at least somewhat. Deanna is tired that she is told that she stays in her comfort zone too much.
She feels that performing an original song is not a comfortable thing to do. J.D. adds that performing power rock is not comfortable. Yikes! Since I have mentioned myself that I thought Deanna has stayed in her comfort zone, I guess I better explain better. I don’t mean comfort zone as in feeling comfortable, but comfort zone as in a limited musical area. Deanna looked so unhappy when sing softer songs that have elongated notes. It was a nicer way of saying I don’t think she is the right musical style for INXS. Sometimes trying to be nice comes out more mean than if one intended to be mean.

Marty defies the advice of INXS and sticks with a harder edge and more intense rock sound. Marty wants to lead INXS in a more modern direction, but that he is willing to meet them half way. I thought there was some friction behind the comments of INXS on Tuesday. INXS tells Marty that they were testing him and that he passed the test. Speaking of a test, I feel like INXS was testing me. Marty is one of my frontrunners to win this competition, but their reaction to Marty on Tuesday made me think that Marty was not the direction they wanted to go. Now, it feels like I overreacted.

J.D. is asked about his antics and that he seems to be getting along better with others. J.D. is still in this to win and feels that he became a singer because of INXS, but has learned that he is not on Survivor. Well, what a week. I guess the real J.D. is not so bad. I think he was overdoing it in all the wrong ways. Despite the rearrangements that J.D. has done, I still feel like J.D. has been masking some of his original style in an attempt to be what he think INXS wants instead of just being himself. I think J.D. has some intense fans because of his originality that has peaked through, and lead singer or not, J.D. should remain more true to himself in style. Ironically he stayed true to himself on the songwriting challenge when I think he should have worked with his group even if it meant compromising. So he knows how to be true to himself, he just needs to figure out the right times.
