Rock Star: INXS - Episode 22
Classics And Train Wrecks
Recap by Gayl Killough
August 29, 2005
The show starts off with the remaining six contestants listening to a
recording of Deanna singing a song that MiG and Deanna wrote. Everyone
seems more affected that a dedicated person like Deanna went home.
Jordis really thought that she was going to be in the bottom three, and
realizing that she had fans that would bale her out, so it just made her
want to be there just that much more. Suzie misses Deanna, but that she
also wanted to celebrate. Suzie seemed more affected by people going
home earlier, but I think that at this point, Suzie is more into the
competition.
The top six will be featured on a compilation CD. The clinic this week is
about recording in a recording studio. They are given a brand new INXS
original song called ‘Us” that they will have to sing and record in a
studio. Andrew and Jon from INXS will be there in the studio to judge
them.
Everyone but J.D. is shown practicing hard on the song. J.D. is shown
sleeping and he looks really out of it. Suzie says that this really is
a test that will compare the contestants on the same material. Jordis is
pumped; Marty is feeling the pressure of going from the top three to the
bottom. Marty asks what is meant by 60’s funk and feels that this song
really pressures him. Marty wants to find a way to meet half way between
his style and their style. Ty says that the studio is really going to
show the weakness of certain voices.
Dave is also on hand and we get to hear him play a little blues on
guitar, I would have liked to have heard more. Suzie is first and with
it especially being early morning, apologizes for a sore chest. This
worries Andrew and Jon, but they say they are amazed by her after one
take and that is rare. They also say that Suzie has incredible pitch. I
agree with all of this, it depends on how one defines voice, but I think
Suzie and Ty have the best voices, but I think would give Suzie the edge
on having the best voice personally. I have heard Ty’s voice as he
recorded with Dakota Moon so I have a good idea of what he would sound
like, but I get the impression that Suzie’s voice could sound incredible
on a recording. Then again, that may be personal taste only.
Andrew makes the comment about Suzie that they loved hearing the song
sung the way in their minds they imagined it. Jordis has decided to
rearrange the song and Andrew and Jon do not like it, Jon says that it
did not do the song justice. However, they still seem to have a lot of
respect for Jordis. Ty is show and they say that he knows how he wants
to deliver the song and they tell him awesome. MiG delivers the song
with a lot of empathy, which I think is critical because it shows to me
that he can transcend and he is not limited by his theater training.
Andrew says the song is meant to be sensitive and is not meant to be
screamed. This leads into Marty’s turn. The “manic” Marty does comes out
and they get him to tone it down and sing it more softly. While I
appreciate the more intense Marty, Marty just sounds incredible to me
when he is singing more regularly. I love his raspy voice. His vocal
issues are not such a problem either when he tones it down. I respect
Marty wanting his style, but I wish Marty would show more of his softer
side while singing too.
J.D. is last and even late. He is shown going over briefly the song with
Suzie and J.D. thinks it just a matter of going in and singing it
straight. J.D. struggles with the song during the recording. It does
make me question how well J.D. can read music opposed to learning a song
by ear, and also how well he can sing a song that he has not rearranged
to suit his voice. I hate to rush to judgment, but I am wondering. The
other contestants seem to almost enjoy the struggles of J.D. since he
has been so cocky. Jordis says that J.D. should have learned the song;
Suzie ironically says that if one blows it that should be it.
Time for the song selection. The songs this week are the classics of the
classics. Two of the songs have to be sung with a choir. Both MiG and
Suzie want to sing “Bohemian Rhapsody”. MiG says this is his number one
favorite song, Suzie just feels like she connects with it the most.
They ask the other contestants for feedback on who the song should go
to. Ty mentions to MiG that they are trying to escape the theater. MiG
gives “Bohemian Rhapsody” to Suzie. Ty wound up with “You Can’t Always
Get What You Want”. MiG takes “Live and Let Die”. Marty takes “Wish
You Were Here”. J.D. takes “Suspicious Minds”. Jordis takes “Imagine”.
Marty makes an excellent point I think that because these songs are so
well known and loved, if they mess it up, the audience will be ready to
crucify them.
They are shown rehearsing with the House Band. Paul mentions that
“Bohemian Rhapsody” is the toughest rock song to sing. Working out the
harmonies with the house band was a struggle. Everything has to be right
on for it to work. Suzie says that it will either go really well or be
a train wreck.
