Rock Star: INXS - Episode 23
An Incredible Performance Show
Recap by Gayl Killough
August 29, 2005
The performances of the final six. The song lengths are getting longer
for the contestants; they almost seem like whole songs now. There is a
choir and a string ensemble in addition to the house band tonight.
Ty is up first with “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. Dave and INXS
use their usual praise words like awesome and great, but this time it
feels like they meant it more than usual. They seemed really pleased.
I really like when a performer goes back to his roots. This seemed the
most like the real Ty and before he learned to be a stage performer. He
brought the song back to its gospel roots, and with the choir, it
sounded great. I do believe that Ty really loves rock, but I believe
that the music of childhood ingrains into a person and helps to shape a
musical persona. A person may not even like the music, but nonetheless
it still forms a musical foundation, whether a person wanted it to or
not.
J.D. is second with “Suspicious Minds”. He has sung this song as an
Elvis impersonator, but says this is the first time to sing it as
himself. He says it is closure. INXS asks him why he would pick this
song, I get the impression that they are displeased, but the comments
were really favorable. According to people that attended the taping of
this show and posted on message boards, there were several negative
comments toward J.D., but it appears that they were edited out.
I was away from my television when J.D. started singing, so I was not
looking at him, but it sounded like a Wayne Newton impersonator had
taken over the show. I think I would have preferred an Elvis
impersonator instead. I think that J.D. tried really hard to not sing
this as an impersonator, but I think he fell short of his goal. It was
some weird combination of what I think is his natural style and his
impersonator style. It was not a bad performance, but to be honest, I
really hated it. I don’t hate J.D. though, but I want to forget this
performance from him ever happened.
Marty decides to show off his softer side with “Wish You Were Here”. The
crowd seems to especially love the performance. Dave and INXS tell him
that they saw a whole other side to Marty and that they loved his softer
side. They want to see more of it.
Marty can actually sing and there was no appearance of manic Marty. His
singing is a little rough because he is not used to this style, but he
has the talent. He also has a magnetic personality on stage that
completely draws me into his performance. I loved this performance,
favorite of the night so far.
Jordis sings “Imagine”. She plays guitar. Dave and INXS are really
pleased with Jordis. INXS says that is hard not to choke up when hearing
that song.
This was an alright performance of a great song. Seemed really safe to
me, but understandable after what happened to Jordis last week. I think
I would have preferred a more simple arrangement of this song, but with
strings, the house band, a choir in the background, and her guitar, it
seemed lost to me. Jordis had no control over that though.
MiG sings “Live and Let Die”. MiG really wanted to sing “Bohemian
Rhapsody”, but decided it was not in his best interest to do another
Queen song, and that he was not re-auditioning to be in a Queen musical.
Dave and INXS tell him that he did the right thing by not picking a
Queen song, and give him great praise. More awesome and great type of
praise. Dave says that he was only 17 when MiG started to hold a long
note.
MiG gives me chills on the high notes. In terms of pure tone and timbre,
I don’t think MiG has a great voice, but if I consider everything that
goes into singing, then I think overall MiG has a great voice. Singing
is a combination of many things and there is no magic formula. This was
a great song choice for MiG. This is the second performance tonight to
give me chills. I am enjoying this week.
Suzie is last with “Bohemian Rhapsody”.....
