"Arc" Angel Robbie Knievel
Recap & Commentary by Mike Meilinger
April 7, 2005
The show begins with Robbie Knievel, son of Evel Knievel, expressing his feelings about his father leaving the family and choosing to be out on his own. He loves and respects his mother for sticking with the family and he can feel however he wants about his dad and if you don't like it, "Kiss his ass"!!! This leads into the big question of the night…
The Million Dollar Q & A
Robbie and his manager Dan Zucker, aka Zuck ask the million dollar question, why hasn't Robbie been able to get out from under his father's shadow. Here is the million-dollar answer. We are talking about Evel (Evil) vs. Robbie. Which name do you think is the greater attention grabber or sparks your imagination? It is American Icon vs. ex-con. Evel was and is an institution unto himself, second only to Muhammad Ali in name recognition. Remember, the copy is never as good as the original. Evel has been there, done that. Maybe not as far, and not with as much accuracy and regularity as Robbie.
Robbie Knievel is a true professional stuntman with equipment that is far superior to anything his father, the true daredevil, ever had. If Robbie wants to get out from under his father's shadow, he has to stop hiding beneath it. Get rid of the Stars and Stripes outfit almost identical to that worn by his father. I know he claims to be All-American and that 98% of his fans love it, but how about some originality. I strongly suggest going more with the flames and wing theme. Robbie wants to play on the bad boy Hell's Angel type biker and that's OK. Who better to emulate than the top dog, Lucifer or Satan himself. Let me explain. According to the bible, Lucifer was the #1 Arc Angel fallen from heaven to spend eternity in Hell. BINGO! Hell's Angel - Arc Angel. Throw in the fact that the physical shape of Robbie in motion while jumping is in that of an Arc and there you have it! He already has the flaming wings graphic for his show Knievel's Wild Ride. Just remember if he does adopt this, you read it here first on Reality TV Calendar. Finally, with the advent of the internet, cable TV and ultra graphic video games and growing popularity of NASCAR, America is not so much enamored with the crash aspect of the jumping.
On The Road Again
This season we will be following Team Knievel as they travel around the country. Robbie states that it's going to be, "A hippy, comic, superhero, rock-n-roll tour, it's a blast". Judging from the first episode, he is pretty much on the mark. Robbie will ride Harleys with his band of merry men chosen to make him laugh and keep things light as they go to each weekly, stressful jump site. His close friend, Austrian Chick Magnet Roman, is also a machinist and Harley mechanic. His skills are sure to come in handy when those Harleys decide to "take a break". Joining them will be Pete the designated driver and rocker. Pete will be hauling the trailer which looks like it can easily handle the two Harleys they are suppose to be riding. It makes me wonder just how much riding they intend to do.
First Stop, Butte Montana
The group pulls into Butte Montana where Robbie grew up. We are introduced to Bill Rundle, Robbie's Crew Chief and friend of over 30 years. Robbie takes time to practice his trade by riding wheelies along train tracks on a bridge suspended hundreds of feet in the air with no guardrail. Personally, this stunt scared me more than the upcoming jump. Robbie and his crew walk into a bar (a hornet's nest) where Robbie is called out by a couple of young punks. Instead of backing down, Robbie stirs up the nest by shooting his drunken mouth off. Robbie then proceeds to get his "Butte" kicked in a bar room brawl. Roman shows he is definitely a lover not a fighter and Pete the rocker is nowhere to be found. All I can say about this is "If you can't walk the walk, don't talk the talk". I do have to admit it was very wise of Robbie to let them kick his ass to avoid any costly lawsuits down the road. Good move, Robbie! The boys get busted on especially Pete for not having Robbie's back. Pete takes it hard, but later comes around by singing a make shift song about the whole incident.
The Fathers Day Interview
Robbie and his father prepare for an on air radio interview on Fathers Day. Robbie says hi to his dad, wishes him a happy Father's Day, and say he loves him. Evel promptly returns the love. Wow we're off to a great start. Right away I am thinking here we go father and son issues as mixed up and equally strong as the one seen on Discovery Channel's hit series American Chopper. Evel is quick to scold Robbie for not wearing a helmet and recalls what happened to good old Humpty Dumpty. The banter goes back and forth ending with Evel recalling how he taught Robbie to ride a mini-bike. The story obviously touches Robbie leaving him choked up and teary eyed. Eat your heart out Teutels!!!
