Recap by Gayl Killough
August 4, 2005
I have mixed feeling about this show in general now. It is coming across as a well-intentioned mess. We are shown snippets of two real cases, snippets of the contestants giving their opinions of the other contestants, snippets of Roy Black giving his comments, and it just does not add up.

The editing also seems to be inconsistent with Black's comments at the end. Since this show has already been entirely shot, I wonder if the show has been edited to reflect things that will happen later on in the show. I am concerned that the producers edited this show to be more interesting, but the consequence is that I don't understand Black's viewpoint based on what I see of the contestants.

Is the editing of the show off or misleading? Should I lose respect for Black?
For those that know something about law, there are not enough details shown to be able to properly follow the cases and I don't trust the snippets of opinions given by other contestants. Even if a lawyer does a great job of analyzing another contestant, it could be taken totally out of context. So I am just left confused by this show.

Being that I value research, I have gathered comments on this show from both legal and non-legal people. The best thing is that nobody is safe. The show does seem to be a strange mixture of reality standard shows and that is not a good thing in this case. A common comment that I have heard is that this show reminds them of Apprentice. I disagree and I was even disappointed that it does not remind me of the Apprentice. I think the show is trying to be a little bit of everything for everyone, but fails because there is not enough for anyone.

Roy Black decided that two of the contestants stood out to him a positive way so they get to pick their own team. He chooses Michael and Barrett. No explanation is given as to why he chose them. Based on the highly edited show I saw last week, I would not have picked these two, so I would love to know his reasoning.

Barrett chose for her team: Oliver, Elizabeth, Anika, and Deep.
Michael chose for his team: Keith, Aileen, Chris, and Regina. Deep and Regina were picked last. I have to comment that I hated this method of picking teams when I was in grade school and it puts Roy Black in a negative light for me because he chose this method.

Deep is glad that he does not have to work for Michael's team. He comes across as emotional and vindictive, but I am going to cut Deep some slack, because I believe I would be the same way. Just in the few minutes that I have seen of Michael, I can not stand Michael. I am ready to get my law degree and purposely argue against him in a case. Michael admits later on that part of his strategy is to annoy them to the point of distracting them. Well congratulations Michael, you are very successful at that. The problem is I suspect that you also annoy the people that you will need to be on your side as well. Michael is smart, but if this editing is true, it will catch up with him.

Regina also comes across as vindictive toward Oliver. Chris likens her to a pit bull that will not leave a leg alone. I get this same sense of Regina too. I really want to like Regina, but I think she goes too extreme with her strengths to the point that it becomes a weakness for her. I do think she is better a lawyer than the editing of the show is displaying.

The first case is Brad Graves versus Ron Hicks. Hicks is a grocery store owner who decided to play a joke on someone he considered a friend. The fake wanted posted depicted Brad Graves as a redneck terrorist. Graves did not consider it a joke and is suing for damages. The second case is Sabrina Belladonna vs. Jason Rosilli; Belladonna is a professional dominatrix who asked Rosilli to create a web site for her business. This is really a boring legal dispute, just with colorful characters, over who has actual ownership of the web site and whether or not Rosilli had the authority to shut down the web site. Deep, Anika, and Elizabeth were assigned to Hicks's defense. He maintains that it was just meant as a joke on a friend and that he tried to make the poster look as ridiculous as possible. The so-called terrorist organization had the acronym of "Eat Me". The picture used of Graves showed him in his hunting gear smiling and looking like a normal hunter in my opinion.

Aileen, Keith, and Michael were assigned.....
