Tonight's episode starts with the nannies at Nanny Central reviewing footage of the next case. The Abners are a family of 5 kids, 6 if you count the dad. The family consists of the following:
The parents:
Dennis Abner - aka "Dennis the Menace"
Dennis is 38 years old. He describes his family as chaotic, loud, crazy and wild - and he's proud of it. Dennis is usually the instigator and troublemaker within the family. He often comes up with unusual ideas to have fun even if it means endangering his kids. The camera pans to Dennis driving a 3-wheeler ATV with 2 kids hanging precariously on him. (C'mon, what's life if you can't scare the bejeezus out of your kids every once in a while? They won't value life otherwise!)
Michelle Abner - aka "Wallflower"
Michelle is a haggard looking mom of 5 kids. She just looks worn out. Every time her husband gets a hare-brained idea, her face tightens up into a look of fear and worry. Yet, although she's concerned, she rarely speaks up. When she does, the kids or Dennis call her names and totally ignore her. Michelle looks like she's living a prison sentence. Dennis thinks that Michelle is a "killjoy" and "too strict". He feels that she needs to loosen up. Dennis essentially treats Michelle like the maid. When there is food that needs to be cooked or something that needs to be cleaned up, that's Michelle's job.
The kids: Emily - 11 - a plucky young girl who plays baseball. She's in the tween stages and is on the phone constantly.
Bridget - 8 - "The Stick" - named so because she is a picky eater. She's so skinny her dad says that you won't see her if she turned sideways.
Rachel - 6 - "The Truck" - feisty little girl but gets pushy. Dad nicknamed her because she'll just plow right over you if you get in her way. (And that's something to be proud of?)
Heidi - 3 - "Hondo" - completely uncontrollable. Throws tantrums and fits. Hates to have her hair brushed.
Jacob - 1 - "Gunner" - according to dad, he's a momma's boy and dad is worried that he's going to be a sissy.
These nicknames were given to the kids by their father, I kid you not.
After reviewing the footage, the nannies are outraged by Dennis' behavior and his total disregard for the safety of his children. Nanny Deb, because of her experience with big families, gets the distinct honor of being dispatched for the job.
Before Nanny Deb gets there, Dennis is shown on camera saying that he doesn't feel that his family needs to change. In fact, he thinks his family is perfect the way it is and if the nanny wants him to change, then she's going to find out that he's going to be a tough nut to crack!!
Day 1:
Nanny Deb arrives in the town of Carlisle. When she gets there, she introduces herself and explains that the first day is for observation only. She instructs everyone to go about their daily business as if she wasn't there. Dennis asks her, "What are you going to do for us?" Nanny replies, "Well, we'll see won't we?" He snarkily replies, "I think we're ok." A not-so-subtle jab to Nanny Deb that she's not welcome. (Obviously, this guy hasn't got a clue. I would think that someone who is notified that they'll be on the show would figure out that FOX only picks families that will provide theatrics - either the kids are possessed or evil, or the parenting is just plain bad. If he was that great of a parent, FOX wouldn't be there in his house filming his family.)
So Nanny Deb gets into the business of observing the family. We see scenes of kids running around, doors slamming in faces, fingers poking electrical sockets, the baby balancing precariously on the stair railing at the top of the stairs, knives being used to open unlocked doors, and the list goes on. Dennis instigates more fun by dragging his kids around on a blanket and down the stairs. The girls barely stay on the blanket without pitching forward head first. Dennis then grabs the baby, hands him to the oldest, Emily, and makes to drag the kids down the stairs again. Michelle, in the nick of time, grabs the baby before he has a chance to be the first baby with shaken baby syndrome caused by bouncing down a flight of stairs. She's concerned and tells them to stop. Dennis calls her a party-pooper and keeps right on going.
One of the kids (either Heidi or Rachel).....
