Renovate My Family: Episode 5
The Blakenship Family
Recap By Marlena Montpetit
October 5, 2004
What can I say about this family!! They have got to be the sweetest family on earth; they really deserve this renovation after all they have been through. The fire that tore thru their home in one night has left this family devastated, wondering all the time what will happen to them when the time runs out. The rental home they are in right now is only paid for one more month, so after that they won't have a place to live. Until now!
Once they are surprised, 1 of the main things they have to do is say goodbye to the old home, none of the family has really done a walk thru of the home after the fire, it is heartbreaking to watch them walk through, the home is completely black inside, you might even think the fire was yesterday, not 5 months ago.
They say goodbye to the home as it gets torn down, and they cry because so many wonderful memories belonged in that home. The get in the limo to go to the city to start their transformation.
Colin got to go to a Braves game with his family and even lived out a dream and got to do a pitching practice with the Braves' John Smoltz and Eddie Perez. They said he was a great pitcher!!
Dad finally got some relief, along with his family when an eye condition was looking at by a second doctor. The 2nd opinion confirmed the condition was correct but he also confirmed that Ken would not go blind by it, as he was told! Glasses could correct it so he will be able to see well as time goes by with the condition.
Rain from Hurricane Ivan hit hard and the construction crew was doing everything they could to keep working through the rain as Hurricane Ivan threatened to wipe out everything they have done so far! They were up on a deck and trying to maneuver an 800lb doorway so it could be attached to the home. Challenging but they got the job done! The Landscapers were laying grass sod in the pouring rain hoping to stop any chance of a mudslide in the backyard. The Dahm Triplets were desperately trying to finish the pond before that got washed away too. Finally Hurricane Ivan hits with no mercy and starts breaking trees so the crew is scared someone is gonna get hurt, therefore its too dangerous and everything gets shut down for the night.
Next day, the weather breaks and they are scared they wont get done, they have to hustle because they have had damage done from the hurricane, Not to mention they did have a Georgia Clay mudslide happen to a certain degree!!
It's the family makeover day, so its time to say goodbye until the reveal happens. Everyone turns out loving their new looks even though they were very nervous.
Last day is here and they finally start to get to decorate the home, the reveal day turned out beautiful, the sun is shining and you couldn't ask for more than that! The family reunites and everyone looks gorgeous! The house is revealed and the whole family is blown away even little Bailey!
The have a front porch so big you could have a party on it, they have a connecting fish pond that all of them love and a sitting area that is perfect to have outdoor dinners at.
The living room, kitchen and dining room was made into 1 whole open concept as the family is very protective of each other so this way they can be in different places but still be around each other.
Nice warm colors, catalogue furniture, its just beautiful.
They created a wall of memories by gathering copies of photos friends and family had since everything went in the fire. The family loves the photo wall.
Colin got the ultimate boys room. His very own baseball room, complete with field mural, baseball jersey and baseballs. Alexis got a very country looking horse riding room! She loved it. All the kids' rooms are together so they aren't alone in a separate part of the home. Alexis and Bailey have an adjoining bathroom so that there rooms are together and Bailey's room is very girly. Pink everything, dolls everywhere, complete with puppy!! Bailey was ecstatic over her room.
Ken & Leslie's room was perfect for their tastes they said. Very soothing, Elegant and Romantic. They have their own bathroom that was completed with standup shower and soaker tub.
Colin gets a surprise in the backyard as he is shown a batting cage with state of the art equipment.
The family then learns that the whole farm area was made over too, with a red barn the way Leslie always wanted it. Everything is fire resistive as well. They have a new chicken coupe and a new arena for Alexis to practice her horse jumping with new Olympic style jumps. The family then learns they have also made their truck and horse trailer very fancy looking!
This family cried a lot and laughed a lot too, you know from watching that they are going to be forever grateful for everything done for them.
Not only did material things get changed this time, but a family's spirits have been renovated too!
