Finally, we get Road Rules 13. After waiting and waiting, MTV finally gave us what we wanted. Six more strangers packed into a tiny RV, traveling all over some unknown land with little money and lots of alcohol. Will they have significant others? Will the producers keep the same formula? Will there be the hunk, a princess, the troublemaker, the whiner? Let's dive right in and meet our six strangers.
As usual the producers have separated the kids into groups of two and scattered them about to meet each other first and then go get the others. First up this time we have Patrick. First I can tell you that Patrick is going to be the hunk. He is nice on the eyes. Patrick is 20 and lives in Illinois. He has a girlfriend waiting for him at home (not that it will matter). He attended the University of Pennsylvania and enjoys wrestling. I think Patrick will do well on these missions. He is strong and seems to be level headed. These types of men always do well on missions. I see him lasting until the end.
Next we meet Jodi. She meets up with Patrick and introduces herself. They seem to hit it off immediately. Jodi is a 22 year old from Virginia. Jodi is a sports fanatic. She will surely be our "athletic girl." She loves all sports but was sidelined by surgery to have part of her intestines removed. Recently single, Jodi looks like she could be a possible distraction for Patrick. I wonder if that is why the producers had them meet up first.
As the two continue to get to know each other, we see a man leading two big huge cows pulling a straw covered wagon. The two jump aboard and they are off to meet their four other cast mates.
We are next introduced to Ibis. She is a very attractive girl with beautiful eyes. Ibis is 19 and lives in Florida, but she was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Ibis describes herself as goofy but she is very outspoken and can have a temper. Ibis is single and could be another possible foil for Patrick and his at home girlfriend.
Coming up behind Ibis, is Danny. The two hug and we get our introduction. Danny is 19 and from New Jersey. He tells us he is gay and came out at the age of 14. He tells us he hopes that there are no close minded bigots here, which means there will be. He is in an 11 month relationship with Ralph but he is still attracted to women too. Should make for interesting life in the RV.
Patrick and Jodi show up in the wagon and pick up Ibis and Danny. They all seem to hit it off. Ibis does let them know she can speak both Spanish and Portuguese. A brilliant move on her part, they are in a country where 95% of the country speaks Spanish. She has pretty much secured herself a place in the finals. The four continue on to pick up the last two.
Our last group of two to meet is Kina and Derrick. Kina is 19 and also lives in New Jersey. She was raised by her grandparents after her Mom suffered an aneurysm giving birth to her. Kina is a very attractive girl but she is outspoken and seems a little critical of people. This could hurt her if she doesn't do well come mission time. It is no surprise they teamed her up with Derrick.
Derrick is 20 and hails from Chicago, Illinois. He is polish and proud of it. Right off the bat, you can tell Derrick is loud and a bit abrasive. He likes to be in charge, but with a RV full of teammates, I am not sure how well this will go over. I can see Derrick getting into a fight with someone or being one of the first up for consideration if they have to vote someone off.
The wagon pulls up, and the other four get their first glance at Derrick and Kina. They jump in and it's like a group of old friends have gotten back together after being apart for a few years. The whole conversation is a bit hard to catch. You get bits and pieces. Ibis is scared of frogs, someone is scared of bugs, and someone looks like the girl from Full House. Everything seems to be going well and then it happens.
Someone tells Derrick that he reminds them of the gay guy from Clueless. He says he doesn't want to look like a gay guy. The camera flashes right to Danny. You can tell he is not happy. I guess Derrick is not "gay friendly." The wagon pulls up to the RV and the excited Road rulers jump out to see there new home. The whole incident seems to be forgotten, for now at least.
The RV looks about the same as it has every year. It is small and cramped. Kina remarks that there is only one bed and that MTV is just promoting sex. Well, duh! Sex equals more ratings so MTV does what it can to help you along. They get their first letter and it tells them to get going, they will get their first clue on their Verizon cell phone later.
They start heading out with Patrick driving. Derrick continues his "gay friendly" attitude when he asks which of them are gay. He says there is always one. Danny is getting more ticked off. He interviews that he doesn't see the need to tell him he is gay. Each person announces that they either have a significant other or if they date boys or girls. When it comes to Danny, he tells them he has a boyfriend. Ibis loves that Danny is gay. She loves having gay best friends. Derrick of course looks a little freaked out. This should be an interesting relationship.
The group gets their first clue: "Get ready for a hot time". They get excited but a little worried. They wonder what the X-Treme part of their title means. They soon find out. They pull up to their first mission and meet Andrea and Fabrizio, the mission leaders. The leaders welcome them. They go over the rules. Each time they successfully complete a mission they get a key. The keys complete a puzzle. Once the puzzle is complete, it will give them a clue leading them to their final prize. If they fail one mission they get a warning. If they fail a second mission, someone must be voted off. The leaders then tell them to give up all their money, wallets, credit cards, etc. The game is on.
The leaders tell them that if they win this mission they will receive 1,650,000 pesos which is about the equivalent of $3000 American dollars and a $500 Visa. That is all the money they will get so they need to make sure they budget well. To get the money however, they must complete the mission. The mission: to bungee jump out of a helicopter into a volcano.
Billerica volcano is the most active volcano in Chile. Now I know the show's name is X-Treme, but an active volcano? The cast mates are not thrilled either. It gets worse when the coordinator comes down to explain how to do the mission and informs them that if something goes wrong with the helicopter, they will sacrifice them. I bet that made them feel better.
They spilt the team up into pairs. Each pair has to jump together. If both don't jump then they are disqualified and the team loses. The first team up is Derrick and Ibis. They go up and with no problems, jump out of the helicopter. Next up is Jodi and Danny. Both are afraid of heights but are going to conquer their fears together. They go up and for a moment, it looks like they might back out. Overcoming their fears, the two jump. That leaves just Patrick and Kina. They go up and jump with no problem.
Patrick and Kina rejoin the group and they fall into a big group hug. They won their first mission. The leaders hand them their first key and the money. They remind them again to budget their money because they get no more. The group heads out on their way.
Now you would think that the reminders to budget their money would have sunk in. Obviously not, the first thing they go out and buy is alcohol. The group decides to celebrate. There is a bonfire outside their RV camp site so they decide to go join the fun. Obviously they bought a lot of alcohol because when they get to the bonfire Derrick is drunk. He starts dancing around the bonfire, being loud, and falling all over Kina. He tries to kiss her but she is not into it. The leader of the bonfire gets angry with Derrick because he is being so loud. The team mates drag him back to the RV.
At the RV, Derrick starts punching stuff. He keeps trying to hit stuff so Patrick takes him out. The others are a little scared of Derrick. They are also a bit annoyed. Patrick tries to calm him down, but Derrick ends up hitting something and bloodies his knuckles. The group goes out and tries to sober him up. They put him to bed and everyone follows.
This looks like it is going to be an interesting season. They showed us a few clips of upcoming missions. Some of them look a little scary. I am looking forward to seeing how everything unfolds with Derrick. He looks to be the Abram of Road rules X-Treme. Let's see if that happens. Join me next week for more Road Rules!
