Road Rules 13: Episodes 7
Is Your Bite Worse Than Your Bark?
Recap By Cari C.
July 20, 2004
As we all know, last week the roadies lost their second mission and had to vote off one of their own. The group has turned it's sadness into resentment. They are not looking forward to a new member joining the fold. To be honest they are being a little too brutal to a guy that they have yet to meet. With that said, let's get started and meet the new guy.
We start the evening out camping on the beach. The RV is still in the shop so they are still in the mini van from hell. The van is nasty. It's infested with bugs, littered with food and trash, and smells like sweat and the dog. Ibis says the thing reeks. I bet it does. What a lovely way to travel. Who wouldn't love to be trapped in a van with 6 people, a dog, a bunch of flies, and smelly trash.
The group is on their way back to Santiago from Calama to pick up the new guy. No one is interested in meeting the new guy but since they have to, Derrick thinks an initiation is in order. They all seem to agree. Kina would like to see the guy stand around naked. Ibis would like to see him eat some cow. The resentment is so thick; you could cut it with a knife.
The group also does not like that the new guy gets immunity. Ibis says that she didn't get immunity when she got there so why should the new guy. Patrick does not want the new guy to come in and try to run things. They have a pretty good thing going and are not looking forward to meeting the new guy. Okay, we get it; you don't want a new team member. I feel kind of sorry for the new guy. They haven't even met him yet and they already hate him. Poor guy.
The cameras pan across a beautiful lake, Melipilla Lake in Santiago Chile. This is where the group will pick up Nick. Our newest roadie is 22 year old Nick. This guy is a nice looking guy, a definite upgrade from Danny. Nick hails from Minnesota but attends college in Wisconsin. Nick seems like he is a nice guy. He does admit he gets stressed out and uptight when he gets overwhelmed. He better get over that quick. The others are just itching for a reason to boot him.
The group pulls in and the first thing they see is the RV. They are so excited. Standing beside the RV is Nick but to be honest, the group is more excited to see the RV than they are Nick. They introduce themselves to Nick. He is so excited to be there. Too bad his team doesn't share his excitement. They introduce him to X the dog. Ibis, who is taking the whole new guy thing the worse, wants to know why they have to get a new guy. She thinks they would be just fine with just the five of them.
Since the group lost the last mission, Nick has their next piece to the puzzle. They head into the RV to put it in its place. They are so happy to have the RV back. It is all clean and patched up. It looks new. Of course anything would be better than that bug infested mini van.
Nick starts to unpack and get settled in. He is trying to learn everyone's name. Ibis, still sulking, is not impressed by him. She thinks he is like a square in a bunch of circles. He just doesn't fit. Kina begins asking him questions about himself. He tells them he considers himself athletic. He played football, hockey, and tennis in high school.
Outside Derrick and Patrick are sitting and talking about Nick. They are not sure what to make of him. They wonder if he thinks they hate him. I don't know where he would get that idea from. I mean Ibis has been such a ray of sunshine towards him. They decide that he better not screw up any missions.
Back inside, the girls start asking more personal questions. They want to know if he has a girlfriend. He doesn't. Kina wants to know if he is straight or gay. He tells them he is gay but has no boyfriend. Nick came out of the closet his sophomore year in college and has never had a long-term boyfriend.
The girls take Nick out to talk to the boys. He tells Derrick he is gay. The look on Derrick's face is priceless. Derrick says that Nick doesn't look gay, cause of course all gay men have "the look." Derrick quickly calls in his heterosexual back up and informs Patrick that Nick is gay. Patrick tells Nick that he has no problem with gay people. I am sure that Nick is happy to hear that. He responds that he has no problem with straight people either.
