The Scholar: Episode 4
To Be, or Not To Be… in the Finals
Recap By Matt Eickhoff
June 28, 2005
Last week, dark horse Milana galloped her way to winning the showdown, by a nose. She is now the third finalist in the Final Five. With only two spots left, the remaining student must be getting nervous. Who can make strides in the last leg of the race? Let's find out!
As the episode opens we find Liz discussing her current crush on Davis. We again see the clip of her saying that Davis gives her butterflies. Liz is then having a conversation with a group of the kids, Davis included, where she is explaining her current relationship situation back at home. Supposedly she's been dating the same guy for years, but they have broken up like 5 times and gotten back together. She says there aren't many options in her small town. The students come to a consensus that the best thing for Liz is for her to get out of her town and go to college in a big city. She needs to spread her wings.
Then we get to see Liz's bio clip. She's from the small town of Buhl, Idaho. She says she's loved growing up in that small town, but she thinks she's outgrown it finally. One of the math teachers from her high school says that Liz is one of the best students he has taught in his 32 years of teaching. She has taken all the math classes that are offered at the school, so now she's taking "discreet math" which is basically a self-taught class, discovering higher levels of math. We then see a clip of Liz's audition tape where she is singing about all of her high school accomplishments to the tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas". It's a tad annoying, but definitely a creative way to show off those accomplishments… plus she actually has a really good voice. She does admit that the one word used to describe her most often is "dork". She admits to being "a huge dork". The last clip we see is of her parents saying that she's "never not" jumped over a bar that was in front of her. Her dad says that it's because the bar was never set high enough. Is it high enough for her now? There's $250,000 on the line!
Back at the house we see all of the students heading to campus for the second-to-last captains quiz. They enter the library where host Rob greets them, and tells them that today's quiz is a jigsaw puzzle. Each student is given an empty map of the United States with the states cut out into pieces. The trick is that not all the states are there, but they still have to figure out where the remaining states are located. Once they are done, they buzz in to stop their timer.
Davis is the first to buzz in at 5:02. He's way ahead of everyone. He then realizes that he has left a piece out. He looks down and sees South Carolina just hanging out. He holds it like he doesn't know what to do. Then Liz clocks in at 7:56, and unbelievably enough she ALSO forgot a piece. She dropped Utah on the floor and didn't realize it. The ten minute time period is now up. Rob announces that Davis and Liz had the quickest times but both missed one state. Scot was next, but had several states out of place. Amari was fourth, but she too was missing one state, Georgia. No one completely finished the puzzle in ten minutes, so the quickest two, Davis and Liz will be team captains.
Max comments that this team challenge will be interesting with Davis and Liz competing against each other, because clearly they have a crush on one another. Liz, in interview, says that Davis is very smart and talented and she has a lot of respect for him.
Next up is Davis's bio package. We see him back in his hometown of Memphis, TN. The first comment we hear is "If I'm not in political office in the next fifteen years, then my life goals have drastically changed". Yeah, or people didn't vote for you! One or the other. At Davis's school one of his teachers calls him a "renaissance man" because he's involved in so many activities. He really enjoys theater, and we see him reciting lines with one of his friends. We also get to see him playing poker with a group of his friends, where he rakes in a big jackpot (just for the camera, I'm sure). He says if there is a competition involved, he of course wants to win, but he hates being described as cocky. He just knows what he's capable of, and he's confident in his abilities.
Back on campus, we see the students....
