The Scholar: Episode 5
What a Difference a Century Makes
Recap By Matt Eickhoff
July 12, 2005
This episode will show us who has made it to the fifth spot of the coveted Final Five. We already know that Melissa, Scot, Milana and Liz have secured their spots in the finals. Who will be the last student to sneak in? Will it be over-confident Davis? Nervous Jeremy? Scholarship Committee favorite Amari? What about Max and Gerald? And last but not least, will Alyssa, the only student to not get a chance in a Showdown yet, finally get her opportunity to shine? Let's hit the books and find out!
As this episode begins we hear the six non-finalists all talking about how much pressure they are under to get the final spot. Max talks about how the feeling of the house has changed. Amari says that she deserves to be in the finals. Then Alyssa talks about how she came into the competition very confident, but then got disenchanted by realizing that there were other kids there that are just as smart as or smarter than her.
We then see Alyssa's bio package. She's grown up in Yuba City, California, which she describes as a small farming town. She tells us that she is Native American and that it's a big part of who she is. Her mom tells us that she does it all… the grades, the school involvement, the community involvement, and she works two jobs. We then learn that her parents were divorced when she was young and she still has a bad relationship with her father.
The students all head to the last and final Captain's Quiz. Host Rob tells the students that because it's down to just one spot left, the four finalists will sit out of this Captain's Quiz and give the other six a chance at becoming captains. Melissa, Milana, Liz and Scot all take a seat on the side. This really puts the pressure on the remaining six now!
The topic of this week's Captain's Quiz is the Bill of Rights. The students will be given excerpts from each of the first 10 amendments and they will have to match the excerpt up to which Amendment it is. While they take the quiz, we hear Davis say "I know there is no one in the house that knows the Bill of Rights better than I do". Well time is up, and unfortunately, Davis was right. He had the fastest time AND had ALL 10 correct. Boooo! Rob tells us that Amari was only one second behind Davis, but got two of the Amendments mixed up. If any of the others had a perfect score, they would be the captain, no matter how long they took to finish. But… none of them did. So Amari becomes the second captain! Yay! I really like her, and I want her to be in the finals. She's the only student that the Scholarship Committee has selected twice, and so I feel like she will probably need to earn her spot in the Showdown by actually winning the team challenge. I doubt the committee would select her again.
Jeremy is crushed that he didn't get a spot as a captain. He says his chances of making it to the showdown are lessened because of it. Alyssa says that she things the show did a good job of choosing kids that really need the scholarship money… but Davis isn't one of them. She says "I would like to see anyone win this money except for Davis".
Rob then explains that for the Team Challenge everyone is going on a field trip! The trip is to the Ronald Reagan Library. The students meet with the director of the library and he gives them a personalized tour. During the tour they get to see a replica of the Oval Office. We hear a voice-over from Davis saying that he's always wanted to be President and being in the Oval Office is just making that more prevalent.
