Survivor Palau: Episode 5
Beef Stew & Root Beer - Livin' Large On Palau
Recap By Professor Dan
March 16, 2005
The recap shows us how lazy-ass Kim got ousted. After the commercial, we're looking in on Night 11 at Koror. Jenn and Gregg are cuddling and Jenn is giggling in an annoying way. Coby privately comments on the lovebirds: " They've gotta think we're stupid if we can't tell they're together." Tom calls over to Willard, who is in the hammock, telling him that he's in charge of the fire. Willard ignores him.
Ulong, Night 11: After Tribal Council, Ulong decides to try to find the cave they were in last week, so they can get out of the thunderstorm. BUT, it's dark, and they get lost. They wander around aimlessly, and Angie is getting pissed, and scared. She finally convinces them to go back to camp, where they get soaked in the downpour.
Ulong, Day 12: They're miserable-freezing, wet, and suffering from a lack of sleep. Angie, in particular, looks pitiful.
Over at Koror, Tom is grumpy-he was up all night tending the fire. Willard is a lazy slug. Tom complains to Gregg about Willard's lack of effort. Privately, Gregg says that because Koror has been winning Immunities, "Willard's been getting a free ride". (Yeah, well, so have Katie and Caryn.)
Reward Challenge! There is a Japanese shipwreck off shore. Each tribe will pull on a rope-and-pulley arrangement that'll move a skiff with one person on it, from the starting point to a buoy directly over the shipwreck. That person will then dive in and retrieve one of 14 sake bottles attached to the wreck. They'll get back on the skiff, get pulled back by their tribe, and someone else will go out. The first tribe to retrieve 6 bottles wins Reward. And it's a good-news, bad-news Reward: the good news is, the winners will be eating beef stew and drinking root beer. The bad news is, they'll be doing it at Tribal Council! Yep, each tribe will vote someone off tonight! The winners will vote their person off, then eat stew and watch and listen while the OTHER tribe comes in and does THEIR Tribal Council. The winners will thus get a look at the inner workings of the other tribe, which might help them later on. Sitting out for Koror: Willard, Katie, Caryn, and Janu. On my go…
Steph and Jenn start off. Each retrieves a bottle, and get back at almost the same time. Then Angie and Gregg go, and Angie gets the job done faster than Gregg-Ulong has a lead. Ibrehem and Coby are next, and Ulong is in trouble-Ibrehem goes down once, twice, three times, but comes up empty each time (once he HAD HIS HANDS on a bottle, then let it go and came up for air.) Meanwhile, Coby has gotten a bottle and is being brought back. Finally James and Steph yell to Ibrehem to just get on the skiff so they can pull him back, as it's obvious that he's not getting a bottle. Koror now leads 3-2. Tom gets another one to make it 4-2. BJ gets one for Ulong. Now Ian is out for Koror, but he has trouble finding the bottles, and James gets one for Ulong to tie it at 4-4. Finally Ian finds one and comes back, and Steph does the same for Ulong. 5-5! Both Ian and Steph go right back out, and it's a close finish, but Ian gets back first and Koror wins again! Stephanie is frustrated, and Angie is in tears, but Ulong are losers again.
Back at Koror's camp, the mood is jubilant, despite having to vote someone out. But at Ulong, James is pissed at Ibrehem: "We lost because of HIM." Steph can't understand how her team can keep losing-she's hoping for a Merge soon. Meanwhile, Ibrehem, no dummy, knows he's "the number-one target right now." (No shit, Sherlock. All those muscles, and you wussed out. Loser.)
At Koror, Tom, Gregg, Ian, Katie, and Jenn are talking, and they're all agreed: Willard has to go. (Crankiness and laziness are NOT survival skills.) Willard knows he's done. He tells Coby that it's a game of personalities, and "I have almost no ability to schmooze." (So Burnett: why, then was a self-described "curmudgeon" with basically no people skills given a shot on Survivor? Out of the thousands of old farts who applied, you couldn't do better than him?) Coby wishes it was Katie going, but he knows he doesn't have the votes, and he'll go with the majority.
The first real strategy emerges, as Gregg talks with Coby and makes a proposal (no, not THAT kind of proposal!) He sees Tom and Ian as a powerful pair, and thinks they need to be broken up and eliminated. Once Caryn and Willard are gone and they're down to 7, Gregg says, he'd like to form a secret alliance of himself, Jenn, Coby, and Janu. The four of them would then pick off Tom, Ian, and Katie. Coby is ecstatic at this. He says they need to get rid of "Tom especially", and Gregg agrees. Gregg points out that he and Jenn can pretend to be part of the five-person alliance with Tom, Ian, and Katie, and get information that way. Privately, despite referring to Gregg and Jenn as 'Ken and Barbie", Coby is excited about the plan, and about the fact that the game is "moving to a new level". In private, though, Gregg is not as committed to the four-way alliance as Coby thinks, saying "IF WE WANT we can flip" and start picking off the strong ones. It sounds like Gregg wants him and Jenn to be able to work both sides. He says the others just see them as "a cute couple", but, he says, "I think we're thinking a hell of a lot more than them."
