Kanika Wade will be covering "The Swan" this season but a personal emergency prevented her from watching the first episode. I'll try to do it justice for her.
Amanda Byram returns as host of "The Swan" and the team of professionals has also remained the same. The experts include cosmetic surgeons Dr. Terry Dubrow and Randal Digby Haworth; reconstructive dentist Dr. Sherry Worth; therapist Dr. Lynn Ianni plus Creator and Executive Producer, Nely Galan, as life coach (though her credentials have been called into question). Hey - she's running the show - she can call herself anything she wants as long as there is no deception involved.
Debbie Siebers joins the crew as physical trainer. There is no laser eye surgeon introduced in this episode.
Once again each episode will feature 2 makeovers. After the "Big Reveal", one will be selected to continue on and take part in the Beauty Pageant that completes the season. The other will be reunited with her family and friends and we'll get to see their reactions.
Tonight's Contestants
Jennifer Patton, a 30-year-old mother who suffered severe burns at the age of six when she was apparently left unattended by her mother. The scars on her face are massive and she comes to the show with the knowledge that they can probably be masked but not completely eradicated. Even so she has high hopes for her upcoming transformation, looking forward to being able to show her face in public without the ridicule she has suffered since she was a child. She will also need a lot of therapy, as it is obvious that she harbors a deep resentment for her mother's neglect.
Kim Wilburn is a 37-year-old mother of four who was raised by a godmother after being abandoned by her mother. Her godmother passed away when she was 14 and Kim spent the following years living with whatever friend would take her in. She is "average' looking except for the weight and lack of tone that comes from having four children. She doesn't seem to need too much outer improvement. Her scars are buried deep within.
The strategy to turn Jennifer into a "Swan" includes a nose job; lip augmentation; eye enhancement; dermabrasion for the scars on her face and neck; breast augmentation; liposuction; tummy tuck; dental reconstruction; "Zoom" bleaching and DaVinci Veneers. In addition she will embark on a daily fitness program that includes a 1200-calorie diet and 2 hours at the gym. She will also receive intensive therapy to help deal with the emotional scars left from the fire and the resulting years of torment and blame.
Kim would appear to require a less extensive physical overhaul. Her procedures will include liposuction for her chin and cheeks; the standard "Zoom" bleaching and DaVinci Veneers (wouldn't all of us benefit from this $10,000 combination!); tummy tuck, breast lift and extensive liposuction. The main focus of her development will be the 1200-calorie diet and exercise program that will include 2 hours a day at the gym concentrating on weight training to provide definition. Most important to Kim's transformation will be her therapy and breaking the habit of using food to fulfill emotional cravings.
Upon arrival Kim is busted when a routine security check reveals a contraband cookie stash. Already it is obvious that she does not understand what commitment to the program really entails. When confronted with the diet they have planned for her she freaks out claiming that it's not the right food for her.
Her dermatologist informs Jennifer that the treatment will lessen but not remove her scars. Since she came with realistic goals, she is not disheartened by the news. The dental surgery she undergoes is intense. I'm not fond of watching these procedures - they are not my idea of entertainment - so I busy myself with straightening the pillows on the couch while listening. The doctor tells us that after a few weeks Jennifer will be noticed for her smile instead of her scars when she enters a room. Before undergoing the rest of her surgery, Jennifer calls home. Her young son implores her to return and the reality of the sacrifice she will make in order to complete her transformation keeps her awake that night.
Kim also spends a sleepless night looking over the halters she purchased but could never wear. She says she doesn't mind pain for the sake of beauty. We'll see about that…
Next comes the surgery and I'm sorry but once again I found some magazines that needed to be put in order. I always skip the gory parts in movies too. You can use your own gruesome imagination to fill in the blanks. Suffice it to say that the procedures went according to plan.
