Episode 2
What Are The Judges Looking For?
Recap by Evan D. Baltz
January 13, 2005
The show opens with the girls back at their mansion discussing the eliminations. They believe that Sabrina should have used her Supermodel Pass more wisely, and think that had a lot to do with her elimination. However, they all seem unsure of what the judges are looking for, because the remaining girls all have different looks.
Rushumba shows up in the morning and introduces them to hairstylist John Barrett. He is there to help makeover the girls with haircuts and hair advice. He comments how perfect Alicia's hair is, and decides to do nothing with it. Things are not quite the same for Betti. She had already cut off some of her hair herself after the elimination, but he now wants to cut it even shorter and to take out her braids. If you have watched any of these model shows or makeover shows, you may have noticed a trend with some of the black women, they tend to be divas and cop an
attitude very quickly, especially about their hair.
Well not especially I guess, they tend to cop an attitude about almost everything. Now I don't know if this is just a product of the producers intentionally selecting diva-types because they think it creates good drama, or some other force is at work here. I tend to think it is the former, in that this "character" has made an appearance in virtually every one of these shows (i.e. Omarosa et al). Joe Schmo 2 even spoofed this.
The hairstylist picks up on this right away and says to Betti he won't be able to help her unless she has a change in attitude. She doesn't like her afro look. He says to the camera, "…basically I tell them to wear a bag over their head." Actually a bag over Betti's head wouldn't be that bad. A sock for her mouth would help as well.
The next challenge for the girls is to learn a dance routine from the L.A. Clippers dance team. Apparently the Laker Girls were booked. Some of the girls can dance, but most cannot. They do their best to learn the routine though. Then they change into their little outfits and perform in front of the dancers who are the judges. Shannon is declared the winner, and receives the Supermodel Pass. She is told she can also grant one to someone else. She chooses Betti, basically out of pity.
Back in the mansion, Alicia is working out. She is trying to tone up, based on what the judges had told her at the elimination. A couple of pizzas are lying around for the girls to indulge in. Only a few of them do.
The next photo shoot is at Santa Monica beach. The winners of the Supermodel Pass are a team and the other girls are told to team up. Then Shannon and Betti are able to decide in which order the teams will go. Learning the lesson from last time, they decide to go last. Each team of girls pose together in their 70s look bikinis. Again we hear some of the judges discussing their performances while we watch the photo shoot.
Back at the house, three of the girls get in the bathtub together (in bikinis) and discuss who will be eliminated. Their best guesses are that Betti and Adaora will go. I am in agreement with them.
Next we see the judges reviewing the photos and discussing who should be eliminated. They think that Krisi is not too bad, but her fake boobs are a little out of proportion and you can see the surgery scar. They think Alicia has only one facial expression and that her ass is still flabby. They think Adaora has no passion and big thighs.
The elimination takes place in Dodger Stadium. Each of the girls is called forward and critiqued by the judges. Shannon tells them that she knows she is a beautiful girl. The judges, although not 100% in agreement, decide to keep her. Krisi is told she is bubbly and they keep her. Alicia needs a different expression and more toning, but they keep her. Jenna can come across too "pin-up" but they keep her. Adoara is dropped. Betti, with her new afro look is kept. Stacy is raw, but needs to learn how to move. She is kept. Stella is fine, but not right for this, and is dropped.
Just six girls remain. I imagine the claws will come out even more next week. What happened to Cheryl Tiegs this episode? She seemed like she was going to be the host of the show last week, but was gone completely for this episode.
