Designing A Better Apprentice

Recap By Matt Eickhoff
June 10, 2005
First of all, I have to start this recap by admitting that I was a huge Project Runway fan. For those of you that never watched, it was a contest reality show where aspiring designers competed each week for a chance at a contract to develop your own fashion line. Because of my love for Project Runway, I may have some preconceived notions about The Cut before it even starts, and my standards are set very high. For anyone that watched Project Runway, I'm sure you can agree that it was one of the most well-cast reality shows in recent years. The eclectic group of contestants brought me back week after week. I'm really hoping that CBS and Tommy Hilfiger will be able to find an equal or better group of contestants (if that's possible). The only way we can find that out is to watch! Let's go!

As the show begins, we see Mr. Tommy Hilfiger make the bold statement, "If you've ever watched TV, opened a magazine, or gone shopping… you know who I am. My name is Tommy Hilfiger". Oh Lord Tommy! Don't start already. Do we have another Trump on our hands?
We get a quick history of Tommy's success. He started off selling jeans in his basement, and now he's a multi-billion dollar designer. Of his collections now, he says "if you can wear it, we make it". Tens of thousands of aspiring designers come to NYC each year in hopes of becoming the next Tommy, but "virtually every one of them will go home empty-handed". But Mr. Hilfiger is going to change that for one lucky person. He says the winner will live his life "in fast forward". The winner will receive a job designing for Hilfiger with a $250,000 a year salary.

As the contestants arrive, they show up to Tommy's design offices. They are all assembled in a lineup on a giant Tommy logo. The group as a whole definitely has an eclectic feel to it. There are 16 contestants, and they are definitely individuals.

(Note: There is a contestant by the name of Tommy as well… so to stop confusion between the contestant, and Mr. Hilfiger, I will now begin referring to Tommy Hilfiger as TH.)

TH enters the room and heads down the line critiquing some of the contestant's wardrobe choices. He comments on one guy's homemade shirt and shoes… on one woman's expensive label clothes… and points out one contestant that is wearing a LOT of Tommy clothes all in one ensemble. That's a little scary. Not something to do on the very first day. He says he's a big fan. Yeah man… we get it.

TH continues walking down the line, referring to one woman as "Ms. Park Avenue", and calling out another guy for his lack of professional attire by saying "you just don't care, do you?".

TH then goes back to the center of the room and welcomes all the contestants to the Tommy Hilfiger World Headquarters. He tells them "this competition isn't about designing clothes… it's about designing lifestyles". He says he's looking for "the next genius… that star". He explains that in addition to the quarter-mil salary, the winner will design their own line, under the TH label. As Paris would say, "That's hot".

TH then says that as trivial as it sounds, first impressions really do make a big impact. He then brings down the two people that he feels have made the best first impression on him. First, was the woman he called "Ms. Park Avenue", wearing a bright pink overcoat. Her name is Julie. We then see a profile clip of her where she talks about being a Midwestern mom of three children. She says that her three kids have prepared her for any chaos that may happen on the show. The second individual that TH calls out is Rob, the guy with the homemade shirt and shoes. TH likes his chic casual look. Rob's profile shows that he has five children, and how he wants to be successful so he can provide for them.

Then, TH explains that Julie and Rob will be picking the rest of the contestants until they are broken up into two teams of eight. This is especially difficult for Julie and Rob because they haven't met any of the contestants yet. They don't even know any of their names. Yikes! Here we go with the third grade dodgeball scenario again! TH explains that each week the teams will shuffle up. He gives Julie the option to choose first.

Julie chooses Elizabeth, a magazine editor from Beverly Hills. Her profile shows that she feels she is equal parts style and business, and that she will fit that bill. She says that she is strong, and willing to speak up when she wants herself to be heard.
