Navigating Through the Gaudiness

Recap By Matt Eickhoff
June 17, 2005
As episode two of The Cut begins tonight, I can't help but say that last week's results from the team were pretty unimpressive. You would think that a gathering of the nations brightest and most creative people would yield better results that what we received. I obviously wasn't the only one that thought this because Tommy Hilfiger (to be referred to at "TH" from now on) was also disappointed, and wasn't afraid to speak up about it. He basically ripped both teams a new one, and hopefully they will learn a lesson from it and step up their game this week. Let's see!

As this week's episode opens, we see the teams back in their SoHo loft whining about the Style Forum that they had just returned from. None of them expected TH to be that straightforward with them, and pretty much downright rude. Almost all of them look like TH just popped their bubble of self-esteem and they are ready to give up.
One person really IS ready to give up… none other than our snotty, nose-in-the-air Shauna, who states that she "came here to design clothes, and was unimpressed with the first assignment". She thought it would be more design- based, and she thinks that challenges like the billboard challenge are trivial. She tells everyone that if the next competition doesn't have something to do with clothes, then she's packing and going home. It looks like she's hittin' the road… because as we saw in the preview, this week the teams are pimpin' out SUV's!

Well the morning comes, and all 15 remaining contestants, including Shauna, make their way to TekniCar, an auto-customization place in NYC. Shauna, in her thick fur coat and scarf looks like she's poised and ready to wave her white flag. TH enters and says that before he tells the group about the challenge he wants to tell them a story. It's about Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones and how he designed some pants for him that Mick said he didn't like, but TH said they would look amazing… turns out the pants looked horrible and Mick was right. So the key is that when designing things, you always have to listen to your client.

TH then explains the challenge. The teams have each been provided with a Lincoln Navigator which them must redo and redesign in order to fit the likings of rap star Fabolous. OK… honestly, the similarities between The Cut and The Apprentice were getting out of hand… but now they are even using the same celebrities! Tell me you remember seeing Fabolous as the emcee of the Best Buy video game tournament on the last few episodes of Apprentice 3! Ridiculous!

Meanwhile, Shauna is none too happy. She says she doesn't even know who Fabolous is, let alone any rappers. TH goes on to explain that the teams will have all the tools they need at the TekniCar shop in order to "trick out" these Navigators, and in addition, they will receive $7500 to do with as they please. They have 36 hours to complete the project, and even sleeping arrangements have been made at the shop which by looks of it is sleeping bags on the floor of a supply closet.

TH then explains how the team reshuffling will work. He pulls out Elizabeth and Chris C. because they were the first two people that were chosen by last week's team captains. They are the new team captains and get to choose. TH explains that the first two people they pick will be next weeks team captains, so they better pick strategically. Overall, I think this system will prove to make the show interesting as time goes on. As friendships form, and alliances start, this team picking will allow some people to have control over things and piss other people off. We all know in a reality show that these elements are needed!

Elizabeth's first pick is Felix, which is pretty surprising considering how he didn't get along well with his team on the last challenge, but she probably thinks Felix will be a great asset to the team with this car challenge. Chris C. picks James. So now, the team captains for next week will be Felix and James.

The picking then goes as follows (in order):
Elizabeth chooses Princess, Tommy, Wes, Chris S., Jessica
Felix selects Rob, Jeff, Deanna, Julie

This leaves Vlada and Shauna.....
