The Cut Gets Punk'ed

Recap By Matt Eickhoff
July 21, 2005
After last week's fairly shocking elimination of James, I have to ask myself… if Tommy ever going to start eliminating the dead weight from this group? There were MANY people that deserved to go home before James did, in my humble opinion. I guess on one hand I sort of like his shocking eliminations because you never really do know who is going home, with Mr. Hilfiger in charge. He's a fickle, fickle man. Let's see who he is in the mood to eliminate tonight!

As the episode begins, we see the contestants hanging out in their loft, discussing the surprise elimination of James. They are all pretty flabbergasted. Princess is already missing James. Then we hear clips of the other contestants talking about who should have gone home in his place… we hear accusations against Princess, Jeff, Shauna, and Liz, who seem to be the least-liked of the contestants remaining. It was brought up that Jeff is the only person to never be on a losing team… and Shauna says it's because all the smart people pick him as a "sacrificial lamb".
The teams meet up with Tommy at the famous nightclub CBGB's in NYC. Tommy explains how he saw the Ramones playing there several years back. He talks about the fashions of the punk bands that influenced the fashions of normal people walking down the street. Because musicians lead fashion trends, the assignment this week is to be the stylists for two up and coming rock bands that have never really had fashion help before. These bands are Unisex Salon (a five member group with one female), and God Or Julie (a four member, all-male band). Each team will be given $2000 and 24 hours to come up with a completely new style for the band. The teams will move in with the bands overnight to learn all about them and get a feeling for their sense of style. In 24 hours, Tommy will meet the teams and the bands back at CBGB's for a performance, where he will choose the winner based on who he thinks has the best sense of style.

Wes and Elizabeth were the first two members picked on last week's teams, so they get to do the choosing this week. The first decision is which band to style. Because Wes's team won last week, he got to choose who he wanted… and he chose Unisex Salon. Liz's team gets God or Julie by default.

Now it's time to pick the teams. The contestants are chosen in the following order:
Team Unisex Salon: Wes - Deanna, Felix, Shauna, Rob
Team God Or Julie: Liz - Chris, Jeff, Jessica, Princess

A few comments made during team selection: Wes said he picked Deanna first because it's always good to have a friend on your team. Jeff said he was happy that Liz picked him second because he feels like he's moving up in the pecking order. Wes said that the only time he's ever worked with Princess his team lost… so when it was down to Rob or Princess, he chose Rob. Jessica was shocked that Princess was chosen last on this task because she's the best seamstress out of all the contestants.

The teams head out to meet the bands at their apartments. The Unisex Salon Team meets up with the band and they are rehearsing. The team seems very impressed with the bands sound. The immediately start talking to the members of the band to find out their likes or dislikes. They look at old pictures of the band, and see that their past style is pretty drab. They want to spice it up a bit. Wes really wanted to give the girl of the group a tie-skirt (made out of old, vintage neckties). She didn't seem too keen on the idea, but went with it. Deanna was a major communicator during this part. She wanted to seem to be at their level, and not preaching at them about what they should wear, and she talked a lot of them into expanding their fashion horizons.

The God Or Julie team shows up at the bands place to find them playing video games. One guy welcomes them to the apartment, while the others seem like they don't even care. Nothing is going to take them away from the game. They start talking on their phones, and not paying attention to the contestants. Finally they start to talk, and the band tells them that they really want to look the same on stage and off stage. They don't want to look like they are wearing costumes. They love black. The band then pulls out a bottle of Jack Daniels and tells the team they cannot leave until each of them do a shot. With a little apprehension, they all did it. Chris came up with the "divide and conquer" concept… there were four band members, so each person on their team should just take one person and work solely on that person's outfit. Liz would design the lead singer, Chris would design the bassist, Princess would design the guitarist, and Jessica would design the drummer. Well, this left Jeff with no one to design, and the rest of the team really didn't have a problem with that. Jeff was definitely annoyed.

Now it was time for shopping......
