Who Will Be "The Cut" Above The Rest?

Commentary By Matt Eickhoff
September 7, 2005
Tonight at 8pm, the finale of Tommy Hilfiger's reality competition "The Cut" will air on CBS. Although this show has recieved mixed reviews and seen poor ratings (along with several time changes), I have really really enjoyed this show. I think the casting crew did a good job of picking an eclectic, yet appropriate group of characters for this show. I think this show would have done better had it not been an almost carbon copy of "The Apprentice". It is basically "The Apprentice: Tommy Hilfiger".

There were several good new ideas from this show though. First of all, the team selection process was a new one, where each week new teams were picked, dodgeball style. Then the following week the first person picked from the week before got to do the picking. It was a great way to mix up the teams each week, and made the team selection process very strategic. It was something original that set this show apart from the others of its kind.
Also, I think "The Style Forum" was a great place for people to voice their opinions to Tommy. It was nice that both the winning and the losing team were there to share their thoughts. It made for great television, and major drama at the end of almost every episode.

Now tonight... the finale. First of all, can I say: Who would have EVER thought that Liz, Princess and Chris Cortez would be the final three? Certainly not me. I think I'm still trying to get over the shock of the double elimination of my personal favorites Wes & Deanna. I honestly thought we would be seeing both of them in this finale... but to no avail. So we are stuck with the-girl-that-annoyed-the-hell-out-of-everyone, the-girl-that-told-the-raunchy-poem, and the-boy-that-is-too-street-and-not-enough-chic. It's really a toss up. Let's look at them each individually.

First, Chris Cortez. At this point, I have to root for him. His story is almost like the movie "Rudy". Chris really REALLY wants to win this job, but all the odds are stacked against him. He continues to work hard, and although he has faltered a few times, he keeps his head up and keeps going. He's Tommy's #1 fan... I mean, do you remember episode one when he came in wearing the ensemble of ALL Tommy clothes? Winning this would be a dream come true for him. How can you not root for him?

Next, Princess. How many times has this girl been in the pit? Definitely more than Liz or Chris. I think that might play against her at the end. She was a part of a LOT of losing teams, but somehow always escaped elmination. You can tell she has somewhat decent ideas, but her execution is poor. I think after last week's episode, we all thought the tearaway skirt sounded like a good idea, but when we saw it actually happen, it was unimpressive. Princess needs to find a way to make her ideas come off as well in a tangible state as they are in the intangible state.

Finally,. Liz. How is she here? How has she done as well as she has? She's a magazine editor for pete's sake! I don't get it. A cast of well-educated fashion design people, and the magazine editor is still around. On top of that, she's won almost every challenge where individual projects were judged! Think back to the first dress design challenge were the teams had to make three dresses, and Liz's idea was Tommy's favorite. Then the photography challenge... chalk up another win. And last week, the trash-to-treasure challenge, she wins yet again. I don't know how she does it, but she does.

So who is going to win? As much as I would love to see Chris win, I honestly think that Tommy knows who he wants... and he wants Liz. He's liked Liz for a while. He has chosen her to win all the individual challenges, and that says a lot. Plus... almost ALL the other contestants disliked Liz, and tried to convince Tommy to elminate her at the Style Forums, yet he never listened. She always hired people to do the work for her, and Tommy knows that... yet she's still here. He was even defending her last week when Princess brought up the fact that she never does her own work. He said he's not looking for someone to work on an assembly line... he's looking for someone with bid ideas to help develop his next big clothing line. His defending of Liz is a big sign that he thinks she has the ability to come up with those big ideas. I hope they bring back the eliminated cast members so we can see how annoyed they are when Liz wins! (Especially Wes and Deanna).
