Recap By Unicornchaser
February 9, 2005
Lambe-Levy Family (Sammamish, Washington):
Marybeth (mother / physician), Mark (father / physician), Brendan, Sara, Emma, John, Yuanjun, Chengming, and Shenbo
Farrell Family (Carmel, New York):
Janet (mother), Dennis (father / HVAC engineer), Brian (20), Stephanie (17), Melissa (16) and Glen (15)
Last week we left Janet telling the Levy family about her being spooked in the house. She wants to bring ghost hunters in & this week we get to finally get to see them in action. Much less excitement than all the Fox build up implied, but that's par for the course. Marybeth is tearful and shown saying "I don't think they want me here."
Marybeth is still working hard to figure out what she can contribute to the Farrell family and connect. She thinks they need some fun so Marybeth picks the Fun Station to visit. Marybeth hopes a family activity will "loosen them up a little". There is a marked lack of enthusiasm from all despite the range of activities from carnival type games to a skating rink. Melissa says she doesn't usually go there but she makes the effort for Marybeth. The comment we get right after Marybeth points out the skating looks fun is "that looks like hell".
Out on the ice they go! Brian and Glen give it a quick whirl but end up just watching. Melissa says she feels like a nerd, but keeps skating although her foot hurts. Marybeth compliments them on their efforts but one by one they drop out. Marybeth keeps circling the rink alone. Marybeth is disappointed that the connection she wants with the family is just not happening. It makes her cry, and miss the bond with her loving family & husband that much more.
Meanwhile, at the Levy house, not surprisingly Janet isn't sleeping well. "There's something really strange going on here". They show the clip of Janet's spooky experience again. Janet is concerned that she may have been contacted by the spirit world. She wants the ghost busters to find out if there are any spirits in the house.
BRIAN'S ARTWORK:
More clips from last week are shown to demonstrate Marybeth's failed efforts to connect with them. They are so quiet and silent, silent, silent! She feels the children have some important issues but doesn't feel she will ever get to have any serious impact "because of the way they are". They are much too quiet, private, sullen and reserved!
Brian's tattooing is a major worry for Janet. Marybeth thinks Brian may be nervous about her judging him because of his body art. Marybeth tells Brian that within an easy commute from her house, Seattle is an amazing city full of tattoos, piercings and all that, although she doesn't know much about it, which Brian should check out.
Marybeth keeps making an effort to connect with him and it finally works! He does finally open up to her. Brian says he doesn't tell him Mom everything. Janet is too controlling but he says he finds it easier to open up to Marybeth either because she's not his mom or so nice. He takes her to his room to see his artwork, which is all over the room.
Brian said he thought she might be "wierded out by me" but she wasn't. Marybeth is very impressed with Brian's art and tells him so... It's obvious he has put a lot of talented effort into it. Brian is amazed that Marybeth rains so many complements about it on him. She tells him it's "pretty powerful stuff, it's incredible, it's great! Your folks must be awful proud, it's amazing!" Janet actually doesn't like it and is creeped out by the art, Brian tells her. Marybeth quickly says, "That's ridiculous, that seems bizarre!"
Marybeth says she doesn't know if Janet understands her kids or if she understands her own. She goes on to say that it's important for a parent to find what lights their child's fire". She points out that "No parent has to love it, but they have to say, you know what, it's your thing go for it!" Marybeth points out one picture she'd have framed out in the house. Of course, as his mom, she would be proud that Brian is a true artist, Marybeth tells Brian.
Fox doesn't show Marybeth making any effort to explain Janet's point of view about the tattoos, piercings or artwork. This, despite Marybeth's admission that they were scary to her when she first got there too, which doesn't seem fair. Of course, it could be just editing and as nice as Marybeth is shown to be, may be inaccurate. And Brian does need support that he obviously hasn't gotten from Janet despite his clear talent as an artist.
