American Idol
Premiere Part 2 - Recap by Jacob D.
January 16, 2008

Tuesday, January 15, saw the first part of a two night premiere for season seven of American Idol. The show stopped in Philadelphia, but tonight they head to Dallas, Texas. The last time Idol was in Dallas was back in season one and they lucked out when a certain Kelly Clarkson showed up. She eventually won the first season and became a big star. Now Idol is back and hoping to find another big star. Will the next Idol be from Dallas just like the first Idol was? Before we get to that, we have to sift through the auditions so, on with the show!

Our first auditioner is 24 year old Jessica Brown from Longview, Texas. She's a stay-at-home mother of two and while her life is stable now, she did have problems with drugs in the past. After trying meth at a party one time, her world became wrapped up in drugs, but she's hoping to start anew. Jessica says that the song that inspired her to get better and start singing again was Carrie Underwood's "Jesus, Take The Wheel." She feels that if she can inspire one person to stop using drugs and get clean, then the journey is worth it. She sings The Pretender's "I'll Stand By You," and she sounds lovely without pushing too hard. I also feel like she has a connection with the song and I believed her singing it. Simon says she made the song interesting and Randy says that while it was pitchy in spots, it was still good. The judges vote while her family waits outside to hear the news. When Jessica walks out with a golden ticket, everyone is thrilled.

Out in the waiting room doing his whiteboy thing is 25 year old Paul Strafford from Crosby, Texas. By vocation, he is a park attendant and makes sure the ball park he works at is pretty and clean. Ryan asks if he thinks about being a big star while tending that park and Paul gives him a big thumbs up. Paul goes into the auditioning room and when Simon asks for something interesting, Paul says he is a member of the American Rollercoaster Enthusiasts. I'm not. I hate rollercoasters. He sings Elliott Yamin's "Wait For You" and there's no way he's going to Hollywood. Yikes! The judges don't like the audition, but think it was joyous and enthusiastic. Paul gets a 'no' vote, but he leaves with grace.

Next is 18 year old Beth Maddocks from Coppell, Texas. She is a huge Kelly Clarkson fan and hopes to have a career like her. She auditions with Kelly's "Beautiful Disaster", but is very high-pitched and off base. Beth doesn't get a ticket to Hollywood. After Beth, we see more clips of bad auditions.

Ryan says in a voiceover that they haven't found the next Kelly, but wonders if the next auditioner will be the new Carrie Underwood? This girl is 16 year old Alaina Whitaker from Tulsa, Oklahoma and at first glance, she does look like Carrie. Although, upon further inspection, I thought she looked like Ashley Tisdale by way of Melissa Joan Hart. She talks about how she's gotten comparisons to Carrie and Randy wonders if she can sing like her. Alaina says she can sing country, but also knows a lot of other genres. Alaina chooses to sing "Stronger" by Faith Hill. She has a great audition, but I'm not sure how I feel about Alaina. I don't want another Carrie Underwood, I want someone with their own style, just like I don't want another Taylor, Fantasia, Kelly, Jordin, or Ruben. Simon doesn't think Alaina is as good as she thinks she is, Paula thinks she has a powerful voice, and when called for a vote, all three judges say 'yes'. Alaina is going to Hollywood.

Up next is brother and sister team Gregory and Mia Tobias, 18 and 16 year olds from Ennis, Texas.
