American Idol: Steven Tyler Talks To Us About JLo, Randy, His Judging Style And More

Hello everyone!
Yes, American Idol is upon us and before the premiere a whole bunch of reporters was invited to be in a conference call with Steve Tyler.
We met with him while he is in NYC (I think) and he took time to answer questions from some of us.
Unfortunately for me, I was not able to hit him with my question: Given how the judging panel is now 100% performers and no one comes from the promotional side of the business, how do you think the absence of a recording company executive will affect the show? I guess we will get the answer to that question in April next year when the sales for the newest Idol’s CD are public knowledge.
While it is virtually impossible to give you every possible question that was asked I hope I will summarize the 30 minute call well enough. Here are some of the bullet points that I took from listening to Steve answer the questions he got:
Steve Taylor never watched a single American Idol show before; according to his own admission.
Steve Tyler is high on life. He is now addicted to adrenaline. Apparently the guy is a year sober, something I didn’t know. He even wanted to crack some off color jokes, but stopped himself short of it. His demeanor was a little cheesy, but quite jovial. He sounds genuinely interested and exited about being in the show.
He is infatuated with JLo. He called her “a Fox” several times. We get it Steve, she is hot and she is Puerto Rican. Yes, there is a correlation between those 2.
Steve Tyler is not here to substitute for anyone. He is not here to play a role. He is not planning on being the resident Simon Cowell. He is planning on being honest but not harsh because that is not his style.
He is not planning to give criticism without substantiating it. He is not into criticizing for the fun of it, but to make these people better.
The call had a hidden agenda, or at least Tyler did. Apparently there has been talk that now that he is in American Idol, he will not have time to deal with the band. There has been speculation and criticism from hardcore fans that he is bailing on the band. He said several times “That kind of talk is bull.” So at least he was able to settle the matter.
He is not pursuing an agenda.....
