American Idol: Two Hours Of Great Entertainment And 45 Seconds For Results
Recap and Commentary By RTVC Senior Staff Writer Lindoro Almaviva

The American Idol
This is the hardest American Idol recap of the season.

No, it is not because I am verklempt because the season is over, please!

This is hard because what we got was a televised concert with about 45 seconds dedicated to the actual results; so how do you recap a concert?

Got thoughts? Post them at the end.

Wouldn’t it be easier to say go to Hulu.com, or American Idol and watch the whole thing?

As a matter of fact, I am going to tell you this: as boring and rushed as Tuesday’s episode was, last night’s send off was a very enjoyable performance that actually deserves to be watched in its entirety because they offered probably the widest variety of music of any American Idol finale.

The show started with a bang when the top 13 covered, again, Lady Gaga’s “Born this way,” this time all by itself (no “Born to be wild”) and it rocked, in a glee club kind of way.

Several of the idol front runners, as it is the custom, got to play with some of their idols.

In other cases, groups of former hopefuls started songs before the creators of the song joined in and turned them into backup singers. Sorry, but that is exactly what happened.

The first former front runner to get a chance to play with an idol was James, who got to rock one-on-one with Judas Priest.

Dressed in what is best described as a future contestant of International Mr. Leather minus the crotchless chaps, James and Rob Halford swapped lines on a medley that went from Living After Midnight to Breaking the Law.

It was James in his element and it was fan-friggin-tastic.

Then Jacob got his turn to do some music with Kirk Franklin, Gladys Knight and a full choir on the song I Smile. During the song, donations were solicited for the victims of the Tornadoes that have hot the Midwest.

The whole performance was a joy; they turned it into a celebration of the human spirit and I was glad to see America see a type of music making we do not get to see very often on primetime; at least not in the Caucasian dominated big networks.

Jacob did his thing and I am not going to criticize, it was really good.

Along the way, interspersed with the performances, the producers and editors poke fun at the judges when they put together a mini feature of how their season went.

Along with JLo’s hotness and Steven’s crazy phrases (Mein Gott, I had no idea he was so prolific) we got to see -every- -single- -and- -excruciating- -instance- of Randy saying “(S)He’s in it to win it!”

Yes, Ryan, I agree with you.....
