American Idol: Is Stefano A Potential Dark Horse? – Ranking the Top 11

Is he a dark
horse winner?
This week on American Idol, the contestants sang songs from the year they were born.

It may not have been the most exciting week ever, but it certainly showed consistent talent throughout the night. In fact, Naima was the only contestant whose vocals and performance were truly a train wreck.

I am wondering if last week’s “Umbrella” performance helped Naima develop a cult following of her own.

I never thought of her as a popular contestant before the Top 13, but now I am hearing more buzz about her reggae and Rastafarian musical feel that I think she may have just carved a niche into the competition.

That is not to say that she deserves to go further than 11th place.

No matter how musically talented or diverse Naima is, or how her funky style sets her apart from the rest, at the end of the day this is a singing competition, and each performance Naima’s vocals get steadily worse and worse.

This week was a real turning point for two contestants – Thia Magia and Stefano Langone.

For Thia, she came into the top 13 so strong, with so much fan support as well as support from the judges, but now I think she is going to finish no higher than 9th.

I really thought her song choice was good this week, considering I selected it, but her phrasing and delivery was so bashful, unconfident, and weak that she truly let all her fans down.

And what was with that weird, off-pitch vibrato? I swear this girl’s tone changes from week to week. I think the competition is eating her whole, and I am betting the judges are probably wondering whether it would have been smarter to ask her to come back in a few years.

And then there was Stefano Langone, who went from potential cannon fodder finalist to a serious dark horse in the competition.

Stefano is not without his faults. He performs the same way nearly every week in a sort of rehearsed Broadway-esque way, and I hope he changes it up and feels like an authentic performer.

His voice is probably one of the most pure and best sounding of the entire group, especially on the men’s side. I think Stefano is a real dark horse but he is going to be one of those contestants who needs to slam it out of the park every week or he stands a chance of going home.

One bad night is not going to fly for America, because his fan base is still in the process of developing and expanding.

However, it really seems to me that the solid five after all these weeks of competition are Pia, Scotty, James, Lauren, and Casey.

I honestly feel like no one is going to be able to break through them.

I think there could be a surprise elimination with Stefano possibly sneaking through, but at this point this five is really very solid.

They have the fans and the love from the judges which will secure their position for a very long time.

Here are my rankings for the top 12 idols:
