American Idol: An American Idol Sausage Fest – Ranking the Top 9
Commentary By RTVC Senior Staff Writer Joseph Braverman
April 1, 2011

A lady leads.
This week on American Idol may have been one of my favorite theme weeks ever.

Who knew almost all the Idols were capable of slaying Elton John songs?

I have never handed out so many A’s in my grading commentary on any week, but this week the Idols definitely deserved it.

You had Lauren finally making a breakthrough performance, Pia sticking it to the judges with aplomb, James showing his mastery of audience control while staying vocally on key, and Casey with a comeback performance that made Ryan almost say Casey had the most number of votes this week -- spoiler alert!

But no Idol came off better than Haley Reinhart, showcasing everything we always knew was there but was never truly shown until this week.

Haley’s signature soulful growl infused with her amazing stage presence and sexy swagger turned out to be potentially the best performance of the season next to Pia’s “I’ll Stand by You” and James’ “Maybe I’m Amazed.”

It brought Haley out of the cannon fodder pack and into legitimate contender status. She easily stole away Stefano’s previous dark horse title, and now that Idol has three girls left, Haley’s chances of survival increase exponentially.

Speaking of this development of an Idol sausage fest, how are people feeling about this?

Overall, I think the talent of the men combined is stronger than the women, but I would have preferred Jacob, Paul, or Stefano especially leaving over someone as creative and different as Naima.

I know Naima’s audience was a niche market, but she brought something new every week, and I never knew what to expect with her and loved that about Naima.
Paul, Stefano, and Jacob – their performances remain very much the same week in and week out.

It’s time for all three of these men to leave consecutively, having a final six of three strong men (Casey, James, and Scotty) and three strong women (Haley, Pia, and Lauren).

I sincerely hope the Idol voters will follow this voting pattern so the strongest competition occurs in the top six.

Here are my rankings for the top 9 idols:
