American Idol: Who’s Winning The Battle of the Billboard Charts? June 6, 2009
Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Logan Huffman
It’s been a few weeks now since America was in an uproar after the newest American Idol was announced. Frontrunner Adam Lambert was beaten by dark horse Kris Allen.
Many people thought that the wrong person won. Everyone expected Adam to be more popular in the music world. Now that the show has been over for a few weeks and each of the guys have had some songs released, how are they faring on the Billboard Charts?
Last week was the debut of Kris and Adam’s songs. Kris’ song ‘No Boundaries’ debuted at number 11, a pretty decent debut for a song’s first week on the chart. But this week, ‘No Boundaries’ fell to number 23 on the charts. Will it rebound once again, or is 11 the top spot it will reach? Only time will tell.
Adam’s version of ‘Mad World’ made an appearance on the chart as well, debuting at number 19. However, in its second week on the charts, Adam’s song fell 25 spots to number 44, suffering a much bigger drop than Kris’ ‘No Boundaries’. Will it be able to climb back up the charts?
Kris also had his version of ‘Heartless’ on the Hot 100, as it debuted at number 16, only five spots below ’No Boundaries’, but three spots ahead of Adam’s ’Mad World’. But like the other songs, it also tumbled in its second week, as it fell to number 33.
Adam has had no other songs chart within the Billboard Top 50 thus far, but Kris did have one other appearance, as his version of ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ made an appearance at number 37. However, it has fallen out of the top 50 since then.
One other interesting fact is that on the Billboard 200 chart, the guys’ ‘Season 8 Favorite Performances’ digital albums are performing a little differently than the singles, as Adam is leading on that chart, with his album at number 33, while Kris’ album is at number 50.
Being this has probably been the most controversial finale of ‘American Idol’ ever, it’s interesting to look at how these two guys’ songs have charted so far.
The guys’ songs dropped quite a bit in their second week, but what does that really mean? Probably not too much. Songs fly up and down the charts all of the time.
Kelly Clarkson’s first single off of her new album, ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ debuted at number 97 on the Billboard Hot 100. It proceeded to jump 96 spots to the number one position the following week, which just proves that anything can happen.
I suspect that when Kris and Adam’s actual albums are released, we will see much better results and higher song placements on the charts.
Did the right man win? I think that’s all up to personal opinion, but one thing is for sure: While Kris seems to be off to an early lead, the battle has only begun.
