American Idol: Adam Lambert Proud But Confused About Being Gay June 10, 2009
In the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine, American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert admits he is gay. The 27-year-old, who lost the Idol crown to Kris Allen, tells the magazine he is proud of his sexuality.
“I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I’m gay. I started to realize I wasn’t like every other boy. I’m proud of my sexuality. I embrace it. It’s just another part of me,” he says.
Lambert also expresses his desire for his sexuality to not affect his music career. “I’m trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader,” he says. “I was worried that [coming out] would be so sensationalized that it would overshadow what I was there to do, which was sing,” he said. “I’m an entertainer, and who I am and what I do in my personal life is a separate thing. it shouldn’t matter. Except it does. It’s really confusing.”
