American Idol Recap: A Could Have Been Great But Wasn't Night
Recap and Commentary by Idolhead Ed
April 19, 2012

At least this time it was belted like it was supposed to be.

But it pales in comparison to her first outing. This was not pitch perfect.
Grade B-

Colton: “September”
I thought for a half second this was going to be Colton’s special moment. Well, a 1/4 of a second later it wasn’t.

I did not like the arrangement at all. It was cool on the piano but not even as good as his first subpar effort.
Grade C+

Elise: “Let’s Get It On”
When I heard this song choice I got sick. This is not a song Elsie can show off her voice with.

But after it started I thought it could be her next “Whole Lotta Love”. I get duped again.

While it was better than her first it was nowhere near her best.

She did show a few of her vocal colors and there were parts that were grade A Elsie but overall it just didn’t quite make it.

I am worried for Elise tonight.
Grade B+

Phillip: “In the Midnight Hour”
On this one Phillip got back to the same old. He was even pitchy in spots.

Yeah he did it without the guitar but hey he needs the guitar.

Not impressive to me at all.
Grade C+

Jessica: “Try a Little Tenderness”
Another could have been. Had Jessica not gone so far from the original intent of this song, this could have been a moment on the show.

But no, this was overwrought. More so than she has ever done before.

Had she caressed this like she is capable it would have been maybe even better than “I Will Always Love You”.

Even a song that requires this kind of treatment doesn’t get it this rough.
Grade C+

Skylar: “I Heard It Though the Grapevine”
What is it with these guys? Going downhill with their second song.

This was about two steps down from the first. I didn’t care for this much at all.
Grade B-

Joshua: “A Change Is Gonna Come”
By default this is my pick of the night.

Joshua didn’t over do it but when the time came he took it to church.

At least this time it needed to go there. He has done better but this was a decent way to end the night.
Grade A

I really thought the soul songs would spark this show into new levels. I guess they’re taking a page from the Voice.

I don’t know what the issue is but for two weeks what should have been spectacular was just OK.

There was not one performance that I will remember two weeks from now.

And the judges gave out 3 Standing O’s. None were earned tonight I’m sorry to say. Maybe the judges just needed to get up to stretch.

Joshua gets Two? Really? Standing O’s need to be reserved for “I will Always Love You” type performances.

It’s going to get to the point the Idols will not want one from the judges.

Got thoughts? Post them at the end.

Well one thing is for sure it’s still better than the Voice.

Is it Wednesday Yet?
