American Idol Recap: A Winner Of A Night - But Who Survives? Recap and Commentary by Idolhead Ed
May 3, 2012
The arrangement actually worked well for his style, whatever that is. I really liked it.
Simon once told Chris Daughtry he never compromised himself on the show and stayed true to himself.
That argument could be made just as strongly for Phillip. Will it win him any votes? Well it won’t need to. Grade A
Skylar: “Fortunate Son”
This was for me the first time Skylar has been able to reel it in just enough in all places to give me a performance I could sink my teeth into and really enjoy.
She was as usual on pitch and where she could have gone all manic she held it in.
There was just enough motion to singing ratio to make it nearly perfect. Grade A
We now get our first singing multiple of the night and it’s a duet courtesy of the odd couple Joshua and Phillip with “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”.
I might be alone on this but I really liked it.
I never thought they would sound this good together because of their not so much contrasting vocal styles but their different singing styles. Yes it was oddly compelling. Grade B+
Jessica: “Proud Mary”
When I heard the song choice I was worried for Jess. This is not a competition song.
It’s a fun run around the stage and make a fool of yourself unless your Tina Turner song.
But somehow Jessica pulled it off.
Her vocal was its usual clean and pure self. And even with all that running around she was able to have great breath control and pitch. Grade A-
Joshua : “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg”
I ain’t too proud to say I have never liked this song. And it has been done on this show 5 times now.
Haven’t liked it by anybody….until now.
Joshua gave this its proper treatment. Not too much and not too little. Yes it got the 3 bears treatment.
Josh out sung the likes of Ruben and George Huff.
I do think we need not ever hear it again on Idol. Grade A
Round 2: British Invasion
Hollie: “Bleeding Love”
This is one of those songs.....
