American Idol Recap: Texas Sends 54 To Hollywood Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Amelia Wasserman
January 27, 2012
Never give up.
Before I launch into this review of Thursday night’s American Idol episode I have to take a minute to ask what is in the American psyche that someone thinks not only am “I a good singer, but I’m better than everyone else that is going to try out nation-wide. And besides singing I am also more attractive and likeable than everyone else who is auditioning. I can win this, hand down! No question.”
And then they suck.
Got thoughts? Post them at the end.
See I’m not American, I’m Canadian and we’re a much more modest breed.
As Canadians we assume that there is always someone better than us. So why on earth would be even bother auditioning? Maybe that’s why Canadian Idol didn’t take off.
Simply not enough people showed up because they just assumed someone was better. Because the truth is, there probably is.
Now we can get to the recap, I call this the William Hung tribute episode.
To be fair, it took until the 5th audition to get a full show of idiot savant’s…or just idiots.
I mean I guess it’s funny to laugh at people who aren’t in on the joke but I’m going to go ahead and say the joke is mostly on the show itself.
I don’t think the producers are giving the audience enough credit.
I think the really compelling moments in the show come when the three judges are in disagreement over who should make the cut or not which turned out to be a big part of this episode.
The way the episode was edited it looked like there was a slew of singers that Jay-Lo thought should make the cut, while Stephen and Randy thought shouldn’t and vice versa.
As an audience member I’m much more connected with the show when I can get behind one of the judges opinions rather than laugh at the mentally unhinged.
Although I have to say I did enjoy watching a 900 pound security guard escort one of the bat shit crazy contestants out the door.
So because the episode took place in Texas we got to see the country and western side of America.
To me, cowboy hats and boots are only worn ironically but that’s not the case in Texas. In Texas, it’s legit.
