It's about that time again; time for a new season of America's Next Top Model!
When last we left off, Cycle 12 came and went. In my opinion, it was the worst season yet.
There were so many ultimately uninteresting girls, so few good photo shoot/challenge ideas, and the pictures just weren't at the same level as they have been in the past.
So who were the 13 girls that competed? Well, first you have Isabella. She was a nice girl, but just could not cut it in the first photo shoot. Jessica was eliminated when she couldn't bring her natural beauty to her photos and Nijah followed when she wasn't making enough of an impression. Kortnie, though funny and nice, wasn't making a splash as a model and Sandra, easily the season's villain, was eliminated after weeks of poor performances.
Tahlia, notable for her burn scars, was eliminated when her self-confidence seemed to be acting as a hindrance. London just missed going overseas because of middling photos and body proportions that the judges found odd. The remaining six girls went to Sao Paulo, Brazil and Natalie was the first to be eliminated in South America when the judges didn't find her body of work to be very inspiring. Fo was eliminated when she couldn't compensate for her short height and Celia, whom I just adored, was eliminated because of her age.
This left a final three of quirky Allison, runway beauty Aminat, and high-fashion Teyona. After the usual CoverGirl assignments, Aminat was sent home in third place because while she had presence and poise, she couldn't take a great photo. Allison and Teyona faced off in the final runway challenge and Teyona was eventually crowned the winner.
Now, it's time for Cycle 13 and it promises to be quite different. First of all, there will be 14 new contestants and all of them will be 5' 7" or under, below the generally accepted height for fashion models. Second, the show will be missing a judge, as Paulina Porizkova was fired after Cycle 12. I haven't heard anything about a permanent replacement, only about a round table of guest judges. If there is a replacement, I guess we'll find out for sure soon. Third, the winner will receive a contract with Wilhelmina Models for only the second time since Cycle One.
Who are those 14 girls and how were they selected? I'm glad you asked because it's time for the premiere which begins, as usual, with the semi-finals episode. Let's get started!
We begin with a montage and voiceover from Tyra, who talks about how she seeks to break the mold in the fashion world. Thus, the, "5-foot-7 and Under," cycle. The girls gather in the Biltmore Hotel of Los Angeles for their preliminary tests. The first girl who speaks is Rae and then Amber, who's thrilled that short girls are getting a chance to represent. Bianca knows she'll have to keep her game up, but touts the fact that she has a brain. Arriving on crutches is Courtney, who broke her foot in the middle of a cheerleading competition. She pulled through the routine so she's sure she can handle Top Model.
The girls are met in a.....
