America's Next Top Model 13: Nicole Leads For Sixth Straight Weeks

This week's episode of America's Next Top Model saw some girls coming alive and others breaking down.
In-house drama centered around Nicole's dry personality, Laura's dyslexia, and Erin's cockiness.
The girls received lessons on how to give interviews and for their challenge, were tested to see how well they think on their feet.
The winner was Erin.
Instead of a photo shoot, the girls had their first CoverGirl assignment, for which they wrote their own scripts.
Most girls struggled, but Erin had the most trouble, eventually breaking into tears.
At judging panel, the judges felt Jennifer's commercial was the best while Erin and Rae were placed in the bottom two.
Though Erin couldn't hold herself together this week, Rae was eliminated because she wasn't memorable.
Six girls remain and on the next new episode, they'll be heading overseas.
Who will be the first to be eliminated and sent home from the new surroundings?

Nicole

Nicole is an 18 year old student from Louisville, CO. She is 5' 7".
Nicole holds onto first place on my scoreboard for a sixth consecutive week. I can't remember the last time I've placed a girl first so often. Maybe Jaslene and Heather from Cycles Eight and Nine? Anyway, Nicole, despite all the grumblings from the other girls, is simply on top of the competition. She's naturally model-esque and has consistently taken some of the competition's best pictures. One area where she hasn't measured up is in personality and presence, at least around the judges, so you'd think she'd crash and burn in a week where CoverGirl is the focus. While she did struggle a bit, she still came away with a good commercial that had the judges complimenting her. She was called second when Tyra was handing out still shots at the end of panel and remains a favorite in the competition. There's just no reason yet to drop her from first.
Also, there are a couple things I'd like to say. One is that, despite all the girls sentiments to the contrary, Nicole really is a very nice and relatable girl. I've found her to be cool and interesting and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Plus, considering we're heading into the final stretch of the competition, I'd like to speculate a bit on her chances. What I'm afraid of is that she's being groomed to be the over-achieving runner-up. I've said it many times before, but I'll say it again: It's usually the most well-rounded girls that win, the ones who are strong on all fronts, not just amazing in one area and weak in another. As such, some amazing and consistently strong girls/judges' favorites, such as Cycle 12's Allison, Cycle 10's Anya, Cycle Seven's Melrose, Cycle Six's Joanie, Cycle Five's Nik, and Cycle Four's Kahlen, have had to settle for second place because they were lacking in certain critical areas.
As such, Nicole's big hurdle is coming out of her shell and showing a strong personality and presence, commanding the room. If she can't clear this obstacle, even her stellar portfolio won't be able to save her, I'm sad to say. Just look at what happened to the afforementioned girls and other star performers from ANTM Photo Shoot past like Cycle Nine's Heather or Cycle Seven's Michelle.

Laura

Laura is a 19 year old waitress from Stanford, KY. She is 5' 6".
Laura hit a few bumps in the road this week and very nearly landed in the bottom two. So why didn't I rank her lower? Because I just don't think she's going anywhere anytime soon. Despite all of her stumbling and bumbling in the challenge and the commercial, what did the judge say about her? Despite the struggles, they love her and her personality and feel she has tons of potential. She's gotten under their skin in a good way and that, combined with her strong track record, makes her someone to watch in this competition.

Brittany

Brittany is a 21 year old student from Livermore, CA. She is 5' 5".
Brittany remains in third place for a second week. She was very middle-of-the-road this week and so her chart placement reflects that. Her critiques in both the challenge and the commercial shoot were that she was very competent, but not very personable. She's had a number of strong weeks in the past and was called third this week, though I think that was more because she didn't mess up while the girls called after her did and not because she was particularly enthralling. I don't think Brittany is in any real danger of going home just yet, but nor do I think she'll be seeing the finals. Unless she can melt this Ice Queen persona, I think third place is as far as she'll go.

Jennifer

Jennifer is a 23 year old model from Philadelphida, PA. She is 5' 5".
I feel like Jennifer is starting to find her groove. Coming off of a strong week with last week's photo shoot, this time she got the chance to show off her strongest suit, her personality. In the interview challenge, she was unflappable and very charming. In her commercial shoot, she was very perky, relatable, and charismatic. Her personality has already resonated with the judges in the past, but they really took notice of her with her commercial and she was called first by Tyra at the end of panel. She already has a few strong photos under her belt, but a few more, coupled with more performances like this, and we could be looking at a serious contender.

Sundai

Sundai is an 18 year old student from Bakersfield, CA. She is 5' 3".
Each week, it's becoming more and more evident to me that Sundai is mostly just getting by on personality. She's taken maybe one or two really good pictures and the rest have been middling. This week, despite her sparkling personality, she delivered an awkward commercial. I feel like she's just not taking control of this competition and is along for the ride. However, personality can go a long way in this competition, and it has, so Sundai could be around for a little while longer, though I don't see her in the final round at this point, much less winning the whole shebang.

Erin

Erin is an 18 year old student from Kenosha, WI. She is 5' 6".
I'm just being disappointed left-and-right by the girls I had such high hopes for pre-season. First, Lulu, whom I ranked second on my pre-season scoreboard, flames out early. Then Kara, whom I ranked first, faces a long and slow demise. Now Erin, whom I had ranked fourth, is crashing and burning. Fire metaphors aside, Erin is just slipping and this week, she took a nosedive. Always dependable for a strong picture, and a cocky attitude, Erin showed that she's not as tough as she thinks she is. She failed miserably in the commercial shoot, despite writing her own script and tooting her own horn, and the judges are still having problems with her lack of personality. They don't think she's relable, they don't think she's charismatic, and now they don't think she's even strong. Erin has a lot of work to do because as I said last week, all the good photos in the world won't save her if she can't be relatable and inspiring. Just look at what happened with Rae.
