America's Next Top Model 9: The Models Go Green
Episode 2 Recap byBy Jacob D.
September 30, 2007
Previously on America's Next Top Model:
The 33 semi-finalists were flown to the Caribbean for their chance to be on Cycle Nine of America's Next Top Model. We met some interesting characters such as tough girl Jennifer with a thick Boston accent and flawed, but strong Marvita with her lovely looks and touching perseverance. Only 13 girls could make it into the house though and those dream spots went to Ambreal, Bianca, Chantal, Ebony, Heather, Janet, Jenah, Kimberly, Lisa, Mila, Sarah, Saleisha, and Victoria. One of these girls will be the latest winner of "America's next Top Model" and a series of challenges and lessons will determine who that is. Let's see what happens.
The girls hit the Fashion District in downtown Los Angeles and Mila is excited to be pursuing this opportunity. Lisa says she has been through a lot so she knows she is going to give this her all. Janet wants to get out of her small town and learn about fashion. Not an original story, but you can't blame the girl. Heather reminds us that she has Asperger's Syndrome, a mild form of autism, and part of that is being very socially awkward. As for the competition, she says her top priority is to have a good time and learn whatever she can.
The girls meet in the plaza of the California Market Center and Mr. Jay welcomes them into the fold. Victoria says she has never been west of Chicago so this is a big experience for her. She also says that now she has to learn to bring her "super-nerdy" skills into the world of fashion. Did I mention that I like this girl? Mr. Jay tells the girls that he wants to show them something special and takes them outside. Behind the market center is a huge, decked out bus like a rock band would use on a big tour. This will be the girls' mode of transportation for the season. Wow! I wouldn't mind taking a ride on there!
On the bus are decals that include slogans such as "100% Bio-Diesel" and "Green is the new Black." The idea of "going green", or being environmentally friendly, has been sweeping the nation and Mr. Jay tells them that this theme will be adopted for Top Model. Going Green isn't just conserving fuel and water, but also apparently includes decking out the inside of the bus with grass and making seats out of old tires. It's a lifestyle folks. Mila says she is supportive of the environmental kick and is aware of what makes the world good. Not to crack down on Mila, but the way she said makes me wonder if the gears in her mind have been oiled lately. Still, it's good to know the girl is all for it.
A Tyra Mail on the bus talks about going green and the girls are taken to their new home. They rush inside and there's a prevalent environmental theme with this house including plants everywhere and pictures of Tyra in tribal makeup. The girls run around the house testing out the catwalk, admiring pictures of Tyra and Cycle Eight winner Jaslene, choosing beds, and of course, jumping in the pool. Ebony tells us that at casting, none of the girls liked her so she is going to be more reserved. Lisa tells us that she has never been in a big house before or else the cops would've been called on her. I like her light, self-deprecating humor.
Meanwhile, Heather is inside the house doodling and writing in a journal instead of joining in the festivities. She talks about her childhood, how lonely she was, and wondering what was wrong with her and why people couldn't understand her. She hopes to get along with these girls. Six girls jump into a tub and Kimberly tells us that she thinks her sense of humor will set her apart. Later, Saleisha, Bianca, and Lisa do their impression of Tyra handing out pictures at judging panel with Saleisha acting as Tyra. Saleisha pretends to hand Bianca her picture and Bianca tells us that she doesn't think Lisa could win America's Next Top Model. She doesn't think a stripper should win. You're acting as if that's all Lisa is. Chantal gets misty-eyed over the view from the balcony and tells us she is very appreciative of what's going on.
In the morning, the girls head out.....
