America's Next Top Model 9: The Girl Who Is Afraid Of Heights
Week 5 Update by Jacob D.
October 18, 2007
Previously on America's Next Top Model:
The girls all had makeovers and the results were stunning. A few drastic changes were made, but none more so than when Bianca's head was shaved due to her damaged hair. The girls had a make-up challenge and Sarah won. At the photo shoot, the girls became various examples of plant life. At judging panel, though Saleisha had a very poor body of work in her photo shoot; Victoria was cut for her abrasive attitude at judging panel. Ten girls remain. Who will be eliminated tonight?

Episode Five: "Dizzying Highs"

Home Life:
At the house, Janet starts talking about the mess the girls are making and thinks everyone should clean up. The girls think Janet is biting off more than she can chew. I think it's kind of a push-and-shove situation. Looking around, there are mountains of dishes in the sink and what looks like a spilled milkshake on the floor, so the girls really should clean up. Although, Janet goes so far as to make a list assigning each girl a chore. Dial it back a bit Janet or at least be more bold in your stand. Were it me, any trash that wasn't mine, I would've started throwing onto each girls' bed.

Heather openly offers her critiques of the other girls. I'm guessing she didn't see Cycle Five when Lisa became the most hated girl in the house for doing that. This season's Lisa, meanwhile, constantly talks about her insecurities. This annoys Sarah who equates her to "Debbie Downer", that infamous character from Saturday Night Live that always brought down the party by saying depressing things. I kind of agree with Sarah on this case. Always talking about what's wrong instead of working to make things right is not a good thing. Sure, get your feelings out there, but then try working on improving the situation.

Later, Jenah and Sarah run around the house nude. Gee, that's the first time I've ever seen that on reality TV.

Posers Galore:
The girls head out to a gymnasium to receive posing lessons from Benny Ninja. I guess he's now the go-to guy for posing classes since Janice angered Tyra by talking about the infamous fat picture of her's earlier this year. He is bouncing on a trampoline so he can teach girls about movement. They won't always be standing still at a photo shoot so they need to learn how to move as models. Each girl takes their turn and those seeming to falter are Janet, Bianca, Ebony, and Heather. Those doing well are Sarah and Jenah while Chantal, Saleisha, and Ambreal get the best marks. Lisa takes her passivity to the next level by trying without trying, kind of like Anchal from Cycle Seven.

Challenge - On Thin Ice:
The girls' challenge this week will be to pose while skating at an ice rink with a partner. Guest and champion skater Lloyd Eisler helps the girls practice the technique. They will each be skating with a partner who will flip them up into the air. Not throwing them through the air, but propping them up. They must each convey an emotion given by Benny, while the judges observe. The judges for this challenge are Benny, Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen magazine Ann Shoket, and ANTM Cycle Six winner Dani. The prize for this challenge will be shooting an ad for Academiks in Seventeen with Dani.

The girls get onto the ice and Janet's portrayal of anger is all over the place. Jenah does a boring version of sorrow, Sarah looks more nonplussed than angry, and Bianca looks stunning portraying joy. Ann even says she has the best smile. Chantal looks lovely with the emotion of joy, Heather has a hard time getting used to the posing, and Lisa's sorrow seems incredibly forced. Oddly enough, the judges can't praise her enough, saying she is fantastic and has an energy that shines. Saleisha conveys joy, Ebony's sorrow is very corny, and Ambreal beams with joy.

After the challenge, Lisa is chosen as the winner in a unanimous decision. I completely disagree with this decision and do agree when some of the girls think Bianca or Ambreal should've won. What's done is done though.

Lisa goes off to her photo shoot with Janet and Ebony, whom she picked to share her prize, and has a grand time. While she's away, some girls talk about how the judges made the wrong choice in naming Lisa the challenge winner. When Lisa comes back, some attempt is made to congratulate her, but a comment from Bianca, about how the makeup that was used is causing Lisa to breakout, makes Lisa think the girls are catty and jealous. Saleisha tattles about how the girls were talking about her and, I think, blows the situation up into something it's not. Lisa, who has already been Debbie Downer this episode, takes it to heart and thinks she is some kind of pariah now. Whatever.
