Age Of Love: Was That a Kiss or a Kiss-Kiss?
Episode 4 Recap by Donna Emery
July 11, 2007
Can you guess what Mary did? She cried. She ran into her room and just bawled.
Amanda was sure that the older ladies' "insecurities" were making them "pick at" the younger girls.
Megan tried to comfort Mary, but it didn't really seem like her heart was in it. Mary wept openly, saying: "I was trying to stick up for us all. I expected more maturity from these women."
Tessa wasn't crying. She was getting ready for her special time with Mark, and said that tonight would "make it or break it" for her. She was a bit peeved that her special date would find her wooing Mark in a cocktail dress and crutches, but was ready to give it her best. Mark wanted to prepare a beautiful, romantic night for her. He said Tessa is beautiful and intelligent. And he did; the room was dimly lit, and full of lovely roses. There was a private violinist in the corner.
Mark gave Tessa exactly what most women would find irresistible: the ideal setting in which to impress him with her true self. He showered her with attention and told her how much he'd admired her moxy at the tennis tournament. "You could easily have given up," he reminded her. So did Tessa grab the chance and show him how much she appreciated the setting - and him?
Not really. Though she did tell him that the time she spent apart from him was hard for her, and chatted briefly about his desire for a family, she spent most of the time wondering about his feelings for Amanda. She told him that Amanda really had "caring feelings" for him.
When Mark said he was disappointed because he hadn't heard her laugh much, she told him it was because she was worried about Amanda, and those feelings. This understandably confused Mark, who asked her if she was there for Amanda. I think she may have been trying to find out if he has feelings for her, but she didn't really express it well.
The next night, as he contemplated elimination, Mark told Host Mark that it would be the hardest one yet. He said he was stressed out. Host Mark asked if any of the women stood out. Mark admitted that Amanda did, and that Jayanna is "just great." He told Host Mark that he needed to talk to each of them separately, because he wanted "one last time to feel a vibe." So, he called them.
First, he asked Tessa to come and talk to him. As Tessa left, Jen wondered if this was going to be how the elimination would be done.
When Tessa arrived at Mark's place, he told her that he'd wanted to learn more about her, so wondered why she'd asked him about Amanda. She said it was because she knew Amanda liked him, and felt that Amanda knew how to communicate with him. She wasn't sure that she knew how to do that. He told her that he admired her, and that she is amazing. He asked her to send Jayanna next.
Jayanna said that she felt it was time to be more aggressive. She told him: "I know there's a connection between us. You've held back. You should have kissed me by now." He must have agreed, because he kissed her. Extensively. She concluded that there is a real physical connection between them. He seemed like he agrees.
Next came Maria, who started her time by wiping off the glitter that Jayanna had left on his lips. She chided him about "all those kisses." Mark wanted to set her straight, since she'd been the one to inspire him to be more open. "I don't want to be a player. I am with other women, and I need to pay attention to them." She told him: "it's none of my business who you date. My business is what happens between you and me." He was impressed by this, and gave her a quick kiss.
Kelli reflected that she's not usually aggressive, but her heart was invested in Mark. She said he's a great guy. She told him: "we all want you to find love, and we all want to find it, too." In order to help with this, she reached out and planted a big kiss on him. She went away telling the others that she thought there was a connection between her and Mark. "He knows where I stand."
Amanda wasn't happy by Kelli's gloating. "It's weird to hear of Mark's other connections. It's hard for me." She told him it was hard. "You have a lot of good choices here," she reminded him. "I'm scared to open up to you." Mark encouraged her, and gave her a bunch of quick little kisses to comfort her. She stopped, and looked troubled.
When he asked her why, she admitted that "when you kissed me, I was thinking of Kelli.
I was thinking of you kissing her."
Mark wanted to know when she thought that had happened.
Amanda told him that Kelli had told them all that he'd kissed her.
Mark wanted to reassure her. He said, " You are the first one I really wanted to kiss, and you are the first one who I wanted to kiss-kiss." Not clear? Not to me, either. He told her that though he'd kissed some of the others, he hadn't kiss-kissed anyone.
The words may have been confusing, but Amanda was convinced and reassured. "He could have told me the sky was purple, and I'd believe him."
Megan came to visit Mark next. She told him that she didn't know how he felt. "We didn't have electricity at first, but I like you." She told him that she's shy.
Mary spent her time with him by saying that she'd felt like their first few days together were distant. She went on to say that each little time together afterwards had made her want to stay and spend time with him.
The last woman to spend time with him was Jen. She said that if Mark wants to spend time with her, he has to show her more of himself. When she got there, she asked if he'd kiss her. He seemed slightly uncomfortable, but very willing to kiss her. He gave her a kiss - NOT a kiss-kiss, I guess - and said it blew him away.
Facing the elimination, Mark admitted that the extra few minutes with the ladies had confused him more than ever. The ladies were mostly unsure of how Mark felt. Megan said she was nervous. Tessa wondered if she'd made the most of her chances. Kelli said she doesn't want to go home. As all of them sat on the couch, Mark came in and said he'd do the elimination right there.
"It feels right, because I've gotten to know all of you so well."
He first spoke to Tessa. He told her that she'd opened up to him and shared her heart. He thanked her for being honest, but said he didn't think things would work out between them. He told her that he sincerely wished that he felt something for her, but he didn't.
Tessa seemed sad, but said now she was sure that "there are lots of sensitive guys out there. I've just been with one."
After Tessa left, the older women wondered which of them would be eliminated. Maria said she could be the one to go. Jayanna said she knew there was a connection between them. Kelli said that she thought that she could have found true love with Mark, but needed time to be sure.
She wasn't going to get it. Mark told Kelli that he felt really relaxed with her, and thanked her for opening up. She said that he didn't feel that things would work out between them. He noted that there is nothing that she lacked, but he didn't think there was a connection. She gallantly hugged him and wished him the best.
She said she hadn't been prepared to leave, and felt blindsided. She said she doesn't need to be reminded of her age, and that she is single in her forties. She said she doesn't want to be hurt, but she does want to find love.
Next week, the competition continues to heat up, as the numbers dwindle. And… there's something about Mary. If I had to guess, I'd guess it was something that involves crying.
Tune in, and let's see for ourselves.
