Courtney isn’t going to let a little thing like fly-fishing get in the way of her real goal: guy-fishing.
Some of the other girls may get distracted, but she knows how to keep her eye on the prize: extra on-screen time for all the catty remarks she’s making. Oops, I mean Ben.
She talks to the camera with her little twisted-mouth expression and dismisses all the others.
Kacie B. is cute but annoying. The other girls just aren’t stepping up. Courtney has to show them how it’s done. She’s going to take the group date and turn it into a one-on-one.
Kacie B. briefly gets Ben’s attention, and Lindzi, who does seem like an outdoorsy girl, tries to get some time with Ben, but Courtney has the winning strategy: she does modern-day helpless.
Modern-day helpless involves showing the man you aren’t clueless. You’re strong and independent enough to try something on your own, but you let the man know he’s better at the activity than you and you still need his help/strength/wisdom.
My guess is that Courtney has used this tactic before. It works well, and she even catches a fish, denying Lindzi the opportunity to show Ben her outdoor skills. She gloats that she caught the fish and the guy too.
That evening, the girls continue fishing, this time for a rose. Nicki shares her “live life to the fullest” philosophy, and she and Ben bond over recent losses of friends. Denied!
Samantha questions Ben about why she’s only been on group dates and lets him know she wants alone time with him. Denied!
Not only denied, but actually sent home during the group date!
Kacie B. gets alone time with Ben and uses it well. She tells him that it’s hard but then goes on to focus on her feelings for Ben. Ben says he likes her and might end up with her. Surely she’ll get the rose…
No, denied! Courtney baits her hook and reels Ben by questioning his feelings for her.
She does it in a way that somehow manages not to make her look insecure but comes off more as a challenge for Ben to prove himself. He does , by giving her the rose. Courtney gets the catch of the day!
Please note that this “prove yourself” technique is a level 12 dating maneuver and should only be performed by those with proper clearance, such as models, actresses, and certain celebrities famous for no known reasons.
If performed incorrectly, the technique will make you appear needy and clingy and may result in the guy’s sudden realization that he does not want to prove himself and may not want to be with you at all.
